Was Hitler a Catholic?

As a life long Catholic who is working on strengthening my apologetics I was recently blindsided by a friend’s husband who told me that Hitler was a Catholic, and that the Church knew. He also said that the Church made no public statements about it and that Hitler was never excommunicated. All of my years in school I never heard this. Not knowing how to answer I said nothing. What is the real story and how can present this to my friend’s husband.
