This was many years ago when I was a child so it’s a bit difficult to remember all the details, but I think before I had my First Communion I had to go to confession, but I don’t think I did a proper confession where I confessed all my sins in the confessional and did things in the proper way because I was too shy etc. but I was still Confirmed and had Holy Communion. Was I properly confirmed into the Catholic Church as a then child if I didn’t have a proper confession prior?

How old were you?

Then you should ask your priest.
I’m not sure what that Priest’s name was or if I could find out or whether he is even still a priest there. I’m now in my 20s and live somewhere else and haven’t been in that Church for over 15 years.

No, I mean ask your current priest.

There are too many variables for us to answer it for you.

If I wasn’t properly Confirmed, presumably then I would need to go through the process and be Confirmed? I don’t think I have a baptismal certificate either, although I have quite a few photos of when I was baptised. Would I then have to be re baptised as well as being confirmed?

Ask your current priest. He’ll guide you through whatever needs to happen.

Do you suffer with scrupulosity?
I might do a bit, but I don’t think I did give a proper and full confession when I was a child before First Communion, so it is a concern that I don’t know if I was properly Confirmed.

We cannot help you. Posting these kinds of questions on the internet will only make your scruples worse. Please speak to your priest.

Talk to your priest about scrupulosity. It is basically OCD in Catholicism, and needs to be addressed.

Unless you were a very precocious child, the average 7/8 year old does not have many grave sins to confess. They are almost always very shy. Priests are accustomed to helping little kids through confessions, there is no need to doubt that your priest did exactly that.

Valid confession or lack thereof prior to the reception of the sacraments of Holy Communion and/or Confirmation has absolutely no bearing on the validity of those sacraments.

There is just a lack of certainty for me as it is a long time ago and I have had doubts about the validity of my Confession.

On the subject of baptism that I brought up earlier, is it possible to get my baptismal certificate from the Church that I was baptised in even though I was baptised 20+ years ago? Would they have that record that I could be sent a copy of?

As long as the Church is still open, you may obtain an official copy of your Sacramental Record from your baptismal parish. (If the parish has been closed, the Diocese can direct you to the proper place).

You simply call them and ask for a copy of your record. The secretaries do this for people just about every day.

This is not relevant to the validity of Confirmation.

You need to talk to your pastor about your anxiety surrounding this issue because you are putting way too much emphasis on it. You were 7 or 8, I’m not sure why you think your confession was invalid but speak to your pastor about that.

Yes. Those records are permanent. You can get them any time your need them. But you do not need them currently.

Yes.

So if didn’t have a valid Confession, I would have still been validly Confirmed despite that?
