Was it a sin to laugh at a video poking fun of Penticostalism?

This was recommended to me via YouTube. It’s a video of Evangelical/Pentecostal preachers knocking people over with the Holy Spirit with noises from the Street Fighter video game series in the background. As a former Pentecostal, looking back in from the outside, I found it hilarious. Afterwards I felt a little bad about laughing at a video poking fun at a religious belief some believe to be legitimate. Am I being scrupulous to feel guilty about finding it funny?

Venial perhaps, but assuming you’ve told me the whole story as it happened I fail to see how it could possibly qualify as anything more serious.

I too feel as if I’ve sinned whenever I find myself amused by the show some sects put on.
Conscience is a peculiar thing and sometimes it’s oversensitive.

You might feel this way because you mock something you yourself believed in in the past.
Just my five cents…
 
It’s funny, but another thread started today, “How to respond when the Eucharist us mocked” addresses the same point from the 'receiving end" so to speak. In both cases, no actual harm was intended, though some may be experienced. Probably avoiding those topics would be the best course…as far as sinning, no mean spirit was intrnded.
 
I watched the video and saw that it was Benny Hinn. All I did was SMH. Because I know He cannot heal truly as Jesus healed…Please read this article if you have time and want to.🙂

I understand how you could not conceal your mirth. And I agree that it is not as serious as you may think. But if you feel bad, just ask God to forgive you.

I also remember in Catechism that we were taught not to say anything bad against different denominations. And on occasion, I’ve caught myself rolling my eyes when I see or read something that is not in compliance to what we believe. I guess I need to ask God to forgive me too. 🙂

I wish the writers of the gospels hadn’t been so serious, I would like to believe Jesus had an incredible sense of humor.

St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi had an interesting relationship with Jesus full of informal banter. Other saints like St. Teresa of Avila had informal dialogue with Christ. I am sure Jesus had a sense of humor. After all he was the perfect man right?

I saw the script of a play once (admittedly during my Protestant days) that had to do with the Last Supper. During the washing of the feet, when St. Peter wanted more that just his feet washed Jesus response was to ask him if he’d bathed that day.
 
Well, the shoe can be put on the other foot.

At my former university, since it was public they would allow these Pentecostal ministers to come and set up a small table on the outdoor commons. I remember vividly one minister in particular had a sign that must have been ten feet high that had a list of religions on one side and what they equated to on the other. For example he had Catholics equal to cannibals.

This guy was sooooo over the top with his presentation and yelling and in people’s faces. Since it was a college campus, oftentimes others looked to get in on the action and yell right back at him. A sorority campus socialite approached and he would scream,“whoremonger!” at the top of his lungs. There were some older men with this cat, and they handed out little copies of the Bible. As I passed one handed me and I looked at it and it was the New Testament. I asked him where the Old Testament was and simply said to me ,“you don’t need to know that half”. :eek:

Yes.

But also, I can see why you’d feel bad. I mean, let’s face it: this video was probably intended to mock religion and those who practice it. And it’s meant to mock those who, ultimately, follow Christ. Yeah, the videos clever. But it’s wrong to belittle people who are seeking Jesus and the Holy Spirit in such a sincere manner as many of these folks are. Let’s be blunt, a lot of the people in this video could teach Catholics a heck of a lot about loving Jesus, when maybe 96% of a Sunday Mass congregation can’t even be bothered to stay for 15 seconds after Mass to pray before the Eucharist.
