Was it necessary for Christ to die for our salvation?

I have been told by a very informed Catholic that it was not necesary for Christ to die for our salvation - just one drop of blood would be satisfactory. Isn’t he correct, except that there were covenant(s) that had to be satisfied and therefore someone had to die?
