Was Jesus asleep?

Hello! Today I decided to go to Mass early and sit in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. I was pretty much the first one in church except the deacon who unlocked the doors. I walked into the chapel and noticed the tabernacle candle wasn’t lit. I thought “Oh dear, Jesus is still asleep!” So I sat there and prayed. I closed my eyes and heard the deacon come in. I kept them closed and heard a lot of noise. He apparantly moved the chairs and kneelers around. He was breathing heavily too. When he left, I opened my eyes and behold, the candle was lit. I thought “what an interesting way to wake someone up!” I proceeded saying “Jesus, now that you are awake…” It was one of those nice moments with Christ! 😃

How very comforting. Nice experiences like that would definitely make someone else’s day.

Since the Psalter says, “He Who watches over Israel [which is the Church] neither slumbers nor sleeps,” where did you get the idea that Jesus was asleep?

Because the candle waan’t lit. A lit candle before the Blessed Sacrament is a sign of the Presence of God. So an unlit candle would mean Jesus is supposedly “asleep”, since He cannot not be in the Blessed Sacrament. That’s my understanding of the OP.
 
OP has a poetic way of saying that Jesus was not present in the tabernacle at that time, until the deacon reposed the Blessed Sacrament and lit the candle.

unless the light went out by oversight, the Blessed Sacrament was not in the tabernacle when the light was out. The light means that Jesus is present. I am glad you had a beautiful experience of Christ’s presence.
 
Either the tabernacle was tenanted or it was not.

And candles do blow out accidentally.

In either case, Jesus doesn’t sleep. And He certainly doesn’t need a night light.

For that matter, He’s not the “prisoner of the Tabernacle.” A prisoner is there against his will. Jesus WILLINGLY comes in the Holy Eucharist. We don’t have Him locked up where He can’t get out.

That’s why freqently the Holy Gifts are reserved in a hanging silver dove–as a reminder that Jesus is free.

Heh, for the same reason He was taking a snooze in that boat on the Sea of Galilee when the storm blew in and the apostles were going bats trying to keep the boat from capsizing… I’ve had similar child-like, simple thoughts when I entered the church and found the sanctuary light was low or smoldering.

The candle did go out over night. I was just being a little funny when I said Jesus was asleep.

I love moments like that, bpcatholic. I used to have thoughts like that all the time. I do miss going to adoration so much! I moved this summer away from my town where I just had to walk a block or so to visit Jesus, it was in the lower church of my parish and I was always alone with Him, it was so nice. Now I live half an hour away by car and I don’t drive! Tell Him I said ‘hi’ when you visit next, lol!
