Was Jesus literate?

In light of the Gospel reading this past Sunday the above question has arisen.
 
The relevant portion of the Gospel reading states:
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written… Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him (Luke 4:16-17, 20).

The Gospel seems to me to be clear. Why is there a question?
