We are talking about Mary of Magdala and Mary of Bethany, who were known respectively as Mary Magdalene and Mary, the sister of Martha.

After the wedding in Cana of Galilee, Jesus had become much more than just a guest in Bethany. According to John 12, when Jesus returned to Bethany from perhaps some of his missionary trips with his disciples, he was hungry and they made him a supper. They who? Mary, Martha and Lazarus.

Since the supper was at their house, Lazarus would sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples, and Martha would serve the table. At the appropriate time, Mary brought a pound of costly perfume and started anointing Jesus’ feet and wiping his feet with her hair. (John 12:1-3) Needless to say, it was quite romantic.

We all know that Jesus was an Orthodox religious Jew, and every Jewish woman knew and knows that she cannot approach a religious Jew, and is not even supposed to talk to him, let alone to touch or anoint him in such a romantic manner if she is not his wife.

I believe we have proved that Jesus was married to the sister of Martha and Lazarus. Now, was she the same as Mary Magdalene? Let’s ask Luke. (Luke 7:36-40)

Luke adds a guest who perhaps was not familiar with Jesus’ wife to criticize him for allowing a prostitute to touch and kiss him that way while she would anoint him with such a costly perfume. She had been a prostitute because that 's the name with which Luke calls her “a woman known in the town to be a sinner.” (Luke 7:37)

Why would the Pharisee, a religious Jew criticize Jesus for allowing such a display of inappropriate behaviour? Because Jesus was also a religious Jew. Obviously, the Pharisee was not familiar with Mary.

Mark says in Mark 14:3 that she would anoint Jesus starting from his head. There is no way a religious Jew would allow such a thing if the woman was not his wife. And the anointing was made in the same place and Mark calls the host by the name of Simon, the leper. That’s Lazarus by another name, since Lazarus was a leper.

Matthew also reports the same place at the house of this Simon the leper who is Lazarus. And Mary anoints Jesus starting with his head.

Conclusion: 1. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the sister of Martha were one and the same woman; 2. Jesus was a religious Jew who, to allow such an anointing by a woman, it’s only obvious that they were married; 3. Now, to insist that Jesus was not married is to affirm that he was not Jewish, and much less a Rabbi. And to claim that all cases of anointing are four different cases with the purpose to safeguard the gospel writers from being charged with contradiction, it will be tantamount to expose Jesus to negative credibility charges for behaving as a “Don Juan.” Therefore, it’s much more to his sacred reputation that he was a married man to the sister of Martha, who was known as Mary Magdalene.

The old thread was closed so I had to get on this silly thred to answer the old. If Jesus was married she would play a significant role in the holy scripture as Christ wife. Many of the apostle where married, even Peters mother in law was mentioned! dont you think if hse was mentioned so would Christs wife if he had one? Yes each priest was married, but was celicbated during there term and since Christ our Lord is called the eternal High Priest he is to be always celibate! and last Jesus is called the bridegroom and the scripture clearly reveals that the church is his bride. His fidelity to the church as the eternal bridegroom necisitates his singleness in his earthly life. One needs to go by weight of evidence. There is a weight of evidence for the singleness and celibacy of Jesus and no evidence whatsoever that he had a wife during his stay on earth. Again it is clear that you are here to persecute gods children and to spread the hate that is from your heart. I am sad for you! I wll no longer waste my time in your foolish debates because you do them blindly with hate and therefore I will not get no where with you, however I will take it apon myself to say a prayer just for you Ben that you may one day open your eyes and embrace your lord Jesus! Good Luck!

I think perhaps our ideas of “romantic” are very different. Especially at the supper table in front of guests.🙂

Ben, Ben , Ben,

Jesus was not married to any woman, Mary of Magdala was not Mary of Bethany,

Jesus supported his widowed mother, an exception to the men must be married rule.
In addition, Jesus was very, very poor, and he was unable to support a wife in addition
to his mother.

I hope and pray that you will encounter Jesus in your everyday life, sometime soon.

Peace be with you always.

No.

Mary Magdalene’s Feast Day is 22 July on the Byzantine Calendar.

Mary and Martha of Bethany, Sisters of Lazarus, are 4 June.

They would not be on different days were the two Marys the same.

Ben, I see you are still posting your opinions. Jesus was not married so give it a break. Have a great night and I will keep you in my prayers. Ben I do have a
question Why do you believe in Fairty Tales ? BTW I started a new thread about opinions

The old thread was closed so I had to get on this silly thred to answer the old.
As I can see, you don’t wanna give me the benefit of the doubt that I am honest in my search of the truth about Jesus. That’s a pity!

It’s not necessarily true that Mary should play a significant role; or she did but it was editted by the Church in the Fourth Century. So much so that they forgot a lot of evidences that we are still finding up to this very day. Peter’s mother-in-law was mentioned only by the occasion of a cure by Jesus. Mary is mentioned several times by the four gospels. What makes you think Jesus’ wife is not mentioned? It depends on how you want her to be mentioned. She didn’t have to be mentioned explicitly that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ wife. But she did things to him that only married couples do to each other. For heaven’s sake Jake! To be married is not a crime. And the reason you present for Jesus not to have been married is too loaded with mysticism.
If you do believe that Jesus was mystically the High Priest, too bad for you because according to the Torah, the Hight Priest could never be single. He had to be married.
One needs to go by weight of evidence. There is a weight of evidence for the singleness and celibacy of Jesus and no evidence whatsoever that he had a wife during his stay on earth.
What do you call “weight of evidence,” the explicit statement that Jesus was married? Is there one saying that he was NOT married? No, there is not. So, we are in the same hypothetical boat. Do you know what you are doing? Stating otherwise that Jesus was not Jewish and much less a Rabbi. I understand that you are not familiar with being Jewish. I am. I live this life. What happened between Jesus and Mary Magdalene could never even in a dream happen between a woman and a religious Jew. I think that the one here who needs to open his eyes is not me but you.

Ben: 😊

Instead of discarding my research of the truth about Jesus, why don’t you explain to me the evidences that Jesus was a married man? You are not Jewish; I understand that you should argue in the dark. But what I bring here for discussion are 100 percent evidences based on Jewish living. If Jesus was a religious Jew, he was
married. If he was not, I am sorry but you should change his name to some Greek name or something else, because he was Jewish. You cannot bake your cake and eat it too. You cannot have a religious Jew of the First Century behaving like a modern Gentile of the 21st Century.

I can’t believe you brought that up to be contrasted with your own NT. I am sure you could have done much better than that. To say that the two Marys were not
the same, you are bringing trouble to Jesus himself. Are you sure you wanna get into that?

Ben: 🤷

Jimdandy, do you know who says that Jesus was not married to any woman? You. It doesn’t say anywhere in the NT that he was not married. On the contrary, the evidences are shouting that he was. And if Mary of Magdala was not Mary of Bethany,
you have already two Marys behaving towards Jesus as if they were married to Jesus. Are you sure you wanna pursui that? It’s gonna be worse to Jesus’ credibility. Don’t forget that
Jesus was a religious Jew.

Jesus supported his widowed mother? With what if he with his group of 12 were supported by a few women from the Galilee, especially Mary Magdalene? Read Luke 8:3. I don’t think you guys are aware of what is going on within your own NT. Guess what? You hit on the head of the nail when you said that Jesus was so poor that he could not support a wife. I agree with you. That’s why his wife supported him, according to Luke 8:3.

Ben: 🙂

I think perhaps our ideas of “romantic” are very different. Especially at the supper table in front of guests.🙂
So, explain why Mary the sister of Martha would do that to a religious Jew
if she was not his wife. It would help me much better than to try to tell me what is romantic
in the bedroom or in the livingroom. My question is: Did Mary, the sister of Martha did that anointing in front of her own family and guests at the supper table or not?

Ben: 🙂

Het Ben did you know that Abraham was also married to a martian from Mars! really its true, there is nothing in the Bible that says he wasnt so it must be true! Come on you sound foolish and arogant as you are stereotyped to be! seriousely grow up! I am sorry that your popel are deminishing, I am sorry that your poeple are known to have killed God in flesh, and I am sorry that you are in a race that is most hated but this doesnt mean that you should manifest petty attacks and persecute Gods poeple! The old testament claims allot of things that are not true! Do really believe that God would limit himself to what some self arogant poeple who called themselves High Priest made for rules? I dont think so, the rule of a rabbi was made by Jews not God! Are you really thinking about what you say before you say it? Like I said before keep your heat in your heart to yourself and stop persecuting Gods poeple! I will keep praying for you! You are lost son!

No, you are not. You are glad because it means blood in the veins of your faith. Although your Pope John 23rd asked publicly forgiveness from the Jewish People for this false accusation throughout almost two thousand years, you don’t talk about because you can’t live without it. So, you guys discard what Pope John 23rd did.

Can you give one example of something that was not made by man? Don’t make me as fool as you think I am. God does not do anything if not through man. We are the tools in God’s “hands” to get things done. I am aware that if it were not for us you would not have a Bible to read or a Messiah to claim as a redeemer. I am aware that if it were not for us you would not have salvation. Didn’t Jesus himself say that salvation is from the Jews? There! (John 4:22)

Ben: 🙂

Ben Did you know that Marys nickname was Dorothy and in her later life she moved to Kansas married a male by the name of toto and lived to be 106 in dog years Thats what I think ,but it may be just my opinion…Have a good night

If you do believe that Jesus was mystically the High Priest, too bad for you because according to the Torah, the Hight Priest could never be single. He had to be married.
The priests in the Aaronic priesthood had to have children in order to continue their line as only those of the tribe of Levi could become priests. Jesus Christ however, is a high priest in the order of Melchisedec, an eternal priesthood. Since Christ is eternal there is no requirement for begetting children to provide successors.

Read through Hebrews 5, 6, and particularly 7.

Dont bother John he is only here to be ignorant and to persecute Gods poeple. You can already tell from the first post that he was manipulating and manifesting lies because of the hate in his heart. All we can do is pray for his lost sould and hope that he will find the truth and light one day!

This is Pauline rhetoric. Paul was an apostate from Judaism. I can’t take anything from him at its face value because he used to teach the Jews to abandon Moses,
to stop circumcising their children, and to renounce the Jewish customs. I consider him worse than a Gentile, who contradicts Judaism for lack of knowledge. (Acts 21:21)

Not the real Jesus of Nazareth. Perhaps the Christ of Paul. The Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish. The truth about him could not be in the NT because there is too
much non-Jewish stuff about him.
