An acquaintance who is a former minister and regularly appears in public with a clerical collar, and identifies himself as “Pastor…(x)” laid this on me today, to wit:

I don’t find justification for this in Luke Chap 1, but he says that Mary was already pregnant when the angel appeared to her, to him, proving his point that Mary was raped by God.

I don’t believe that for a second. My question is, Does anybody know of a denomination anyplace that pedals this kind of blasphemy or baloney exegesis as truth?

No, Crumpy. This is not supported by Scripture and is not taught by any sect that I know of.

Your friend has a screw loose.

How sickening. . . prayers for that poor misguided man are sorely needed. :gopray2:

No. Mary freely choose to carry Jesus in her womb. She told Gabriel, “I am the handmade of the Lord. Be it done to me arrording to Thy Word.” If Mary would have refused, God would not force it on her. But God chose Mary to be the New Eve for a reason: her obedience.

Actually, this theory does hold a rather valid point. Though Mary did techniqually consent, she was rather young and undoubtedly naiive, and I doubt that a request to mother God’s son was one she could say no to if she wanted.

Consider some modern day cults, for example. In many of these, the cult’s leader impregnates many of the women in order to produce more followers. Now, these women verbally consent for the most part, but if you think about it, they couldnt exactly say no if they wanted to, considering the leader’s power and authority.

Now, I’m not saying Christianity is a cult, I am merely comparing two similar senarios. Mary, like the women of those cults, would most likely have felt obligated to bear the child, regardless of whether it was what she really wanted.

The quote as to what Mary said to Gabriel seems to strengthen this observation. “I am the handmade of the Lord. Be it done to me arrording to Thy Word.” A translation of this could be that, as the Lord made her, she is his to do with what he will. While this could be consent, it could also be seen as grim resignation at what is to come.

All evidences suggest that it was a consentual intercourse.

True, but the only evidence was written by men, in a time period where men could sell their daughters into slavery and the only punishment to a man caught raping an unmarried women was to pay her father a fine and marry her, so I’m sure that the definition of ‘rape’ is far different now from what it was back then.

this thread makes me imagine how “god” got mary pregnant. 😛

I’m sure Mary could have said no. God let’s me say no to His will all of the time. Sadly, unlike Mary, I sometimes do. In fact, if anyone wants to, they can reject God’s will of spending eternity with Him.

When Mary said “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” that hardly makes one think of “grim resignation.”

This sounds like some extreme feminist or liberation type theology.

Thats because unlike Mary you did not really get the benefit of talking to an Angel. Not even in your wildest dream.

Please note, this thread has a very touchy subject. If you wish to continue the discussion from an intellectual standpoint that is fine. But let’s not take it further than that.

God bless-

Well on one hand this is a good example of the strange stuff people come up with when they ignore chronosystems( time factors) and assume God to have the worst attributes known to man instead of the best.

**1)**Since when has the notion of “being chosen” denoted coercive force or invasion?

**2)**Where does the Bible define evil spirits (demons) as rapists that “penetrate” human bodies without one’s consent?

Didn’t Mary, when told of God’s plan for her, agree to it and basically say something like, “Let it be done”?
