Was Mohammad without sin like Jesus? If not, how can Muslims claim he is greater than Jesus?

Am not sure where they got this teaching from, but this is the Islamic belief:

The Prophets (Alayhim Assalatu Wassalam), are infallibles of all sins, whether major, minor, or disbelief, and of all that is detestable/distasteful. It may be, however, that they commit insignificant lapses and inaccuracies [those are not true errors, as they usually indicate choosing the good, not the best. Secondly and most importantly, the Prophets, Alayhimus Salam, are immediately alerted to any lapses, and constantly directed by Allah towards the best].

Does the Quran indicate that Mohammad sinned (atleast once)?

Was Mohammad without sin like Jesus?
Of course not, he was a sinner like everyone else, here are verses from Quran & hadiths about his sins:

(Quran 48:02):
That Allah may forgive thee thy faults of the past and those to follow; fulfil His favour to thee; and guide thee on the Straight Way;

(Quran 47:19):
"Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for the fault, and for the men and women who believe: for Allah knows how ye move about and how ye dwell in your homes. "

(Quran 74:05):
And all abomination shun!

(Quran 94:02):
And removed from thee thy burden

(Quran 93:07):
And He found thee wandering, and He gave thee guidance.

(Quran 80:1-11):
[1] (The Prophet) frowned and turned away,[2] Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).[3] But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?[4] Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?[5] As to one who regards himself as self-sufficient,[6] To him dost thou attend;[7] Though it is no blame on thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). [8] But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, [9] And with fear (in his heart), [10] Of him wast thou unmindful.[11] By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:

Sahih Muslim, Book 032, Number 6285:
A’isha reported that two persons visited Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) and both of them talked about a thing, of which I am not aware, but that annoyed him and he invoked curse upon both of them and hurled malediction, and when they went out I said: Allah’s Messenger, the good would reach everyone but it would not reach these two. He said: Why so? I said: Because you have invoked curse and hurled malediction upon both of them. He said: Don’t you know that I have made condition with my Lord saying thus: O Allah, I am a human being and that for a Muslim upon whom I invoke curse or hurl malediction make it a source of purity and reward.”

how can Muslims claim he is greater than Jesus?
What to expect from them if in the first place they deny his crucifixion (Quran 04:157).

I am not sure that Muslims even claim that Jesus was without sin to begin with but of course we know that He was without sin. That said, Muhammad was a sinner just like every other person except for Jesus and Mary to have ever lived.

Sam once provided a hadith that says Jesus never commit a sin…but obviously Muhammad still managed to put himself above.

****Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 506: ****
The Prophet said, "When any human being is born. Satan touches him at both sides of the body with his two fingers, except Jesus, the son of Mary, whom Satan tried to touch but failed, for he touched the placenta-cover instead.”

*Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0373: ***
"
…Allah would gather people on the Day of Resurrection and they would be concerned about it, and Ibn Ubaid said. They would get a Divine inspiration about it, and would say: If we could seek intercession with our Lord, we may be relieved from this predicament of ours. He (the Holy Prophet) said: They would come to Adam andsay, Thou art Adam, the father of mankind. Allah created thee with His own hand and breathed unto thee of His Spirit and commanded the angels and they prostrated before thee. So intercede for us with thy Lords, that He may relieve us from this position of ours. He would say: I am not in a position to do this, and would recall his error, and would fight shy of his Lord on account of that; go to Noah the first messenger (after me) sent by Allah. He (the Holy Prophet) said: So they would come to Noah (peace be upon him). He would say: I am not in a position to do that for you, and recall his fault which he had committed, and would fight shy of his Lord on account of that, (and would say): You better go to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) whom Allah took for a friend. They would come to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and he would say: I am not in a position to do that for you, and would recall his fault that he had committed and would, therefore, fight shy of his Lord on that account (and would say): You better go to Moses (peace be upon him) with whom Allah conversed and con- ferred Torah upon him. He (the Holy Prophet) said: So they would come to Moses (peace be upon him) He would say: I am not in a position to do that for you, and would recall his fault that he had committed and would fight shy of his Lord on account of that (and would say): You better go to Jesus, the Spirit of Allah and His word He would say: I am not in a position to do that for you; you better go to Muhammad (may peace be upon him), a servant whose former and later sins have been forgiven. He (the narrator) said: The Messenger or Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: So they would come to me and I would ask the permission of my Lord and it would be granted to me,…
."
(E) (A).

Notice in the above hadith Muhammed couldn’t say that Jesus recalled his fault, because simply there is none.

So Mohammad is clearly a sinner, and yet they place him above the sinless Jesus! 😃

Islam teaches that the Prophets of God (peace be upon them all), are people selected by God Himself to deliver His message to mankind.

The Muslim belief that Prophets are sinless primarily relates to the fact that the Prophets of God delivered His message in its purest form. They did not add anything to it, on their own, and neither did they hold anything back from it.

The Qur’an says that Muhammad (pbuh) is a true Prophet of God and if he had falsely ascribed something to God, he would have been punished like no other individual.

Had he invented lies concerning Us, We would have seized him by the right hand and severed his heart’s vein; and no one from amongst you could have protected him (from Us). … (Al-Haaqqah 69: 44 - 47)

The Qur’an also tells us that to supervise the unadulterated deliverance of the message, the prophets are closely observed by God.

As for the messengers whom He has chosen, He guards them from the front and from behind to make sure that they have delivered the messages of their Lord. … (Al-Jinn 72: 27 - 28)

Besides this, Muslims also believe that because God Himself, on the basis of His all encompassing knowledge, selected these prophets for delivering His message and to become a model for their followers, therefore these prophets must have been the best of mankind living in their particular times and societies.

However, this does not mean that the prophets do not commit any mistakes because as we know, mistakes are not synonymous with sin.

These prophets may commit mistakes, which are corrected by God, but these mistakes are not sins. Even these mistakes are in the way of righteousness.

Mistake, as we know is not synonymous with sin. These prophets may commit mistakes, which are corrected by God, but these mistakes are not sins. Even these mistakes are in the way of righteousness.
Adam wilfully disobeying Allah is a mistake?

Muslims believe that Adam (pbuh) was not created perfect.
The point we want to discuss is whether Mohammad sinned or not. Could you give a yes or no?

I would say, “Yes”. He sinned (according to your own Muslim sources which Sam has pointed out). But Jesus was without sin.

If Christians wish to equate mistakes with sins, then I suppose that this would be their prerogative.

Islam teaches that Prophet Jesus (pbuh) did not die and is alive in Heaven and he will return to the world at some point in the future and live for another 40 years or so before he too will die just like all of God’s creations.

And so, this means that Jesus (pbuh) has not lived even 50% of his life in this world and whether or not he will commit mistakes in the remainder of his life after he returns, only God Himself would know the answer to this.

As Sam pointed out

Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0373:
“…Allah would gather people on the Day of Resurrection and they would be concerned about it, and Ibn Ubaid said. They would get a Divine inspiration about it, and would say: If we could seek intercession with our Lord, we may be relieved from this predicament of ours. I don’t think it says mistakes here. Does it?
Islam teaches that Prophet Jesus (pbuh) did not die and is alive in Heaven
**Jesus himself said that he would be crucified **and that he would rise on the third day. And the earlier prophets also said so. But Mohammad gave his own false revelation.

“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.” (Mark 10:33-34)

You people say Jesus was your prophet and yet don’t believe his own words!

If Christians wish to quote Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0373 to show that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) sinned, then this would be their prerogative as well.

However, they cannot have it both ways and they need to accept that the following part of the hadith is true as well:

…You better go to Jesus, the Spirit of Allah and His word He would say: I am not in a position to do that for you;…

And this means that Christians need to ask themselves this question:

On the Day of Judgment, why would Jesus (pbuh) say that he is NOT in a position to intercede on behalf of anyone?

And why does he then tell the people besieging him that they should instead go to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) for this intercession with their Creator??

yes we believe this hadith is authentic per Islamic standard but it does not mean we believe in the content of the hadith as “divine”. The hadith still proves what it proves.

…You better go to Jesus, the Spirit of Allah and His word He would say: I am not in a position to do that for you;…
You’re trying to escape from the question I asked you! 🙂 You didn’t give me a “yes” or a “no” to the question, “Did Mohammad sin or not?”

Your own Hadith proves that he sinned. That should be sufficient for you to realize that Mohammad cannot be greater than Jesus who was without sin.

You’re trying to escape from the question I asked you! 🙂 You didn’t give me a “yes” or a “no” to the question, “Did Mohammad sin or not?”
According to the Muslim understanding of ‘sin’, the answer is ‘NO’.

According to the Christian understanding of ‘sin’, the answer is ‘YES’.

Are you satisfied now?
Your own Hadith proves that he sinned. That should be sufficient for you to realize that Mohammad cannot be greater than Jesus who was without sin.
On the Day of Resurrection, an infant who died will be raised as someone who is without sin…

However, can this child intercede to his Creator on behalf of anyone??

And so, again I ask:

On the Day of Judgment, why would Jesus (pbuh) say that he is NOT in a position to intercede on behalf of anyone?
