At the age of 23, I was attending a nondenominational Christian Church. They had a sermon on forgiveness that , and I decided to forgive my father’s murderer. I approached the pastor, and was baptized that night, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

I’ve recently watched a video on how protestantism can create emotion, that you can confuse with being called to something, and can be confused as experiencing the Holy Spirit. That being said … I never took any classes on baptism. At that moment, I felt moved, but was it from the Holy Spirit, or was it a mirage of emotion? If I haven’t received my Sacraments, does my baptism count? If I didn’t know that mortal sin was a thing… was it still washed away? Can I be re-baptized in the Catholic Church? I’m not exactly sure how this works.

Thank you!

If you were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, the baptism was valid and cannot be done again.

If the pastor poured water over you and said the words, “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” then you baptism is very likely valid. All of the effects of baptism would then apply. Your sins would be forgiven and you would be made a child of God.
If you are interested in becoming Catholic then it sounds like you would not have to be baptized over again. I recommend taking that up with the priest and the people in charge of the RCIA group that you are studying with.
Welcome to the Catholic Church.

I am sorry about your father. The validity of your baptism is not dependent on your knowledge level. If the Protestant minster had the correct intention, used the correct Trinitarian form and the correct matter, water, your baptism was almost certainly valid. Talk to a Catholic pastor if you are interested in receiving the other sacraments, Confirmation, Penance, and the Eucharist. Baptism is the gateway to the other sacraments, the beginning of the Christian journey.

If you want to be Catholic then talk with a Catholic priest about it so you can receive catechesis and make a profession of faith and be confirmed once you are prepared for it.

God bless you in your faith journey.
I thank God for the extraordinary grace of forgiveness for your father’s murder.
It is a special blessing of God for something potentially life-shattering.
