Recently I went to confession where the priest asked me a question. He said what bothers you the most about what you just said? I feel like I knew what he was getting at. I had re-confessed some old sins and was probably being over worried. I got nervous about having to talk about this with him so I said the gossiping. Which wasn’t really untrue, because I was thinking I should be more worried about the bad things I am doing now, not the things in the past. But emotionally I was more worried about the things that had happened in the past. Anyway I really think he knew I was more worried about the past sins because that’s what most of his advice was about. But I want to know did I lie to him? Did I make my confession invalid?

I don’t think you necessarily lied. It sounds to me as if you simply got a bit flustered and just blurted out an answer without too much thought.

Either way, you confessed your sins and he absolved you. That’s all that’s required. The pastoral conversation between a priest and penitent does not affect validity.
