This is sort of an urgent matter. I went to confession today at the Catholic university near my house. I would normally wait, but having the weight of a mortal sin on my soul, I had to go. When I entered the confession room, the priest, wearing a polo and “peace” stole had moved the kneeler and screen out of the way so I was forced to sit in front of him. He introduced himself ans shook my hand as if we were about to make a business transaction, then said, “what can I do for you?”
I confessed my textbook mortal sin. He then told me it wasn’t a real sin, made me feel scrupulous when I wasn’t, then without giving me a penance or asking for an act of contrition, said a prayer of absolution, that seemed to be ad libbed. He inserted my name in it for example. I did hear him say “I absolve you in the name of the father, son and holy spirit.” Was my confession valid or should I make a trip to the cathedral tomorrow?
If it means anything, I *feel *as though my sins haven’t been absolved.
Should I write the pastor? This “augustinian” community is as heterodox as it gets, but I feel there’s something gravely wrong when the sacraments aren’t being administered properly, if they’re even valid.
