Having followed this thread I’ll second that.

Thank you both Fr. David and Apologist.

The OP will be much more comforted Im sure.

I just thought I would update you all on my confession experience last night.

As I said - I made an appt. to see the new priest out our parish. He was just ordained a year ago - and a close friend (who is in the sem) has only good things to say about him - so I was hopeful that it would be good.

I sat down with him and told him what happened last time and that I had brough a list and wanted to confess everything over the past 6 years. He was very happy to hear that I was back and welcomed me to confess all that I needed to.

I held it together pretty well - but when I came to the parts of my list about not keeping myself pure - it got very difficult. I had to stop and gather my courage to continue. But he was very patient with me, offering kleenex - which was nice 😉

He was simply amazing - so kind and gentle.

I have never in my life felt so cared for and loved as a child of God.

He told me that hearing my confession - made his week…which I laughed and said that he was the one who made MY week.

When I left, and even now, I feel as though I am busting at the seems filled with joy and peace. 😃

Thank you all for helping me decide my best course of action last week - going last night was an amaxing experience for me.

God Bless!

Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you recieved what God wanted you to have- love, mercy, forgiveness and joy. Confession is never a bad idea.

My eyes welled uip reading that - Im SOOOO happy for you.

At confession yesterday (Saturday) the priest seemed to use a different form of absolution and I didn’t observe the phrase “I absolve you”. I asked him if he absolved me and he said yes and I told him that I didn’t hear that part and he said no problem. I am not going to worry too much about this but I am wondering if it was valid. If he said he absolved me then I do want to take his word. Maybe if he used a different form then I was not sure when to expect the phrase. He also spoke quickly. I have been to the same priest before and he also used a form that seemed different. Except in that case I think I did hear the phrase “I absolve you”. Are there alternative forms of absolution?

No. There is only one form of absolution in the Latin Rite. Priests cannot change the sacraments, they must be obedient to Rome.

Hi and thank you. As far as I know the parish is a faithful to the Magisterium. Maybe he used an older traditional form?

There are 2 valid and licit forms for the sacrament of Confession in the Latin rite, the “older” rite and the new rite Pope Paul VI 1973.

Whether the priest used the words of absolution from either rite, we can’t tell by reading what was posted here. It could simply be that the person didn’t hear the words, even though they were in fact pronounced. On the other hand, if the priest used his own words, that would be a problem.

In either case, the words “I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father…” are essential for absolution, and as long as they were said (even whispered or said quickly) the absolution was valid.

Hi Father and thank you. The priest may have used the older form then. He also didn’t ask for an act of contrition. I think that he offered good guidance however.

I went again today to a place where they offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation on weekends. I explained about this and I was given absolution. Praise and thanks to God!
