Was my confession valid?

I recently went to confession with the intention of doing a general confession, since I had reason to believe that a number of my sins (some of them mortal) had not been confessed, or had at leat not been confessed with the proper contrition and/or specificity.

To help me with this I brought along a few pages of notes, since there was no way I could have remembered everything. I gave the list to the priest, and he simply said that he could see I had taken a long time with it and was sure I was sorry, and he absolved me without reading the list!

Was this confession valid? Do I need to go through all these sins again for God to forgive me? (Some of them are very embarrassing). Should I have insisted that the priest read the list? I really wanted to put the past behind me and obtain peace of conscience, and now I feel as anxious as ever.

What would you suggest I do now? Thanks.

Hi,

You did your part. If the priest didn’t want to read them, that does not reflect on you. The Confession was valid and you don’t have to go over anything,

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
