Was my confession valid?

Hi,

I went to confession today and I am concerned about its validity. Instead of the traditional formula for absolution, he said something that ended with “I bring you the good news that your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Would this be valid or should I try to go to confession again somewhere else? Help!

It might be better to post this question on the “Ask an Apologist” forum where you can get an answer from a trained professional.

In my amateur opinion, your confession was probably valid, though I would think that the priest’s use of nonstandard words may be illicit.

Ask an Apologist. It’s probably valid, but the apologists are pros.

Hum…if that was all he said…I would go see another Priest and go to confession.

I’ve only been to confession twice and both times I waited with bated breath to hear the priest say “I absolve you”. It’s a shame one has to wonder if a Priest is going to use the correct words of the sacrament.

(one would note I would think (perhaps at the end…) that you had confessed them elsewhere (not saying where)…but that the formula of absolution was not given correctly…and of course add sins committed since too)
