Hello,

I recently made a confession but the priest did not ask me to say the Act of Contrition. I realized that he did not ask but I didn’t remind him because I thought it would be impolite and I think I might have caught him when he was busy. I said it afterwards anyway. Was my confession valid even though I could have said something but didn’t? I think it is based on what other people have said online but I’m not sure. Is the Act of Contrition required for the sacrament to be valid?

As long as he absolved you using the Trinitarian formula it was valid. The reciting of an Act of Contrition is not essential to the sacrament.

Yes, the confession you made and the absolution imparted was valid, regardless of the absence of an expressed act of contrition.

I’ve been through the same thing. I’ve read that as long as you are sorry for your sins that is contrition.

Thank you all for the clarification. I thought it was but wanted to make sure.

Many priests expect you will make the Act of Contrition on your own just before or after (but it doesn’t render your absolution invalid if you didn’t).
