My wife and I were confirmed last January after doing rcia together the year before. We were still waiting on a decision on my anullment petition, but my priest said he was confident it would be granted and we could join the church and receive the sacraments even though we didn’t have an answer yet. We also got our children baptized. I just received a letter that my anullment was granted. Was our confirmation, and our childrens baptism, valid?

Dear Friend,

It appears that all the sacraments are valid. BUT I hope that you and your wife have been living in a celibate way until you are finally married in the Church—not just annulled, but validly married. To have marital relations with a person with whom one is not validly married is a mortal sin. To have such relations while receiving the Eucharist is a further mortal sin of sacrilege. However, if one does not know that these things are sinful, one is not guilty of sin. I am hoping that your priest told you to be celibate at this time.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
