Was my stealing/borrowing a venial or mortal sin?

[accidentally]

I stole (borrowing without asking) $20 from a family member. I was short on money and I am going to pay it back once I get paid.

I know this is a sin, but I am finding conflicting information on if it is venial or mortal sin. Some sources say if the amount is trivial, then it is venial. Some sources say that any stealing (unless it’s out of necessity, like food) is a mortal sin.

Just wondering, I will confess it either way.

You are asking the wrong questions. Try these: If it was stolen from you, how would you consider it? Would you consider it venial? How betrayed would you feel that they wouldn’t ask you for the money?
