Was polygamy commanded by God in the Bible?

It may be a yes. Islamic inheritance law certainly does not favor women very well. If a husband dies, the property would go the male relatives if he has no sons, only a small portion would go to the wife.

In a normal divorce law, my wife’s friend husband would practically have to pay her alimony through his underpants and he certainly cannot get custody of the children. He would be considered adulterous and deserting his wife. Its different story altogether in Islam as the wife has to submit and be subservient to the husband. In theory the wife can object to her husband’s polygamy but in reality the wife would be bullied to submission either by the expectation of other Muslims or the Islamic law itself which the husband can apply to his advantage.

As you have noted, there’s probably no Quranic verses to support the assertion that the wife can object to her husband’s taking another wife; so the wife has everything to lose. I cannot see the wife can be treated fairly in such circumstance.
How obviously unfortunate that we don’t have Ham_ posting anymore to expose his superiority feeling of Islamic justice regarding this matter…

So is our country allowing this Muslim man to do this to his wife??

I am afraid our country is now so infiltrated and the government so corrupt and anti-Christian, nothing will be done.

I am coming to the point not to even bother with Muslim posts if they insist on giving us their version of the crucifixion, and so on, and using Scripture in a distorted way…inspite of what we share…it is a subtle form of agitating and upsetting Christians. I heard a Bosnian Muslim admit they deliberately upset the Serbs when they call them Bosnian as that is the Muslim name for Serbia.

As the Muslim practice obviously upsets me, I won’t return but I do wish to encourage the Mormons to return…

This thread was started by a Mormon I think and the discussion was centered on the Bible. Then a Muslim came in and throw the whole thing haywire with their version of polygamy and ‘I believe your Bible, I do not believe your Bible’ trickery and provocative trolling discussing style.

As it is the idea of polygamy being commanded by God is thoroughly untenable except for those who practice it.

The Book of Mormon actually condemns plural marriage.
“27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.” (Jacob 2:27-30)

The key here is the Lord says, “if I will… I will command my people, otherwise they shall” not practice plural marriage.
The Book of Mormon may condemn plural marriage, but Doctrine & Covenants, which is also considered a scripture by us mormons, still allows it in section 132.

Like most people who have read their way through the Old Testament, some of it is pretty surprising. The two things that bothered me most was the “Thou Shalt Not Kill” commandment followed up by the story of Jericho and the relentless slaughter of the Caininites who were in the Promised Land after the exodus. The other things was the polygamy.

I have since come to the conclusion that there’s a general rule and a specific commandment. I know a lot of you won’t agree with this, but I am trying to reconcile contradictions here. The general rule is Thou Shalt Not Kill and Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery. But exceptions were made for people who were “ripened in iniquity” and for certain prophets and kings.

Whatever you say about polygamy, it’s hard to make a case for it to be a better form of marriage. I would say it’s a lesser form of marriage for everyone. The wives suffer the most because of the men’s thinly spread emotional and finicial support. The men are run ragged from the demands of many wives. The children are a bit better off than the children of a single Mom but not much. They share the fathers weakness with regard to emotional and finicial support.

But like war, there are certain circumstances and saintly/well-off men where there might be some value in polygamy. Especially where and when the women are less independent than in modern Western cultures.

In conclusion, I think that it’s pretty safe to say that war and polygamy are bad for a society and the common good. Not always but almost always and the ability to call those exceptions is God’s work.

The fact that males and females are born 1/1 provides evidence about the truth of marriage.
Hello,

I wish I had more time to devote to these discussions. I really enjoy talking, learning and thinking about the doctrines of the gospel.

It is true that males and females are fairly closely born on a 1 to 1 ratio, however, by far more women are more righteous than men. Look at all the prisons for who commits the most hanis crimes. Look throughout history at the difference in righteousness between men and women as a whole. I think it’s reasonable to assume there will be many more women than men in the presence of God in the next life.

Keep in mind that the Book of Mormon only condemns plural marriage when God commands it. God has the perfect right to command it and condemn it when He sees fit. The Lord’s ways are not mans ways. We don’t fully understand the “big picture” that the Lord can see. In the case of David, the Bible clearly teaches without exception that God “gave David his wives”. The Catholics and other traditional Christians may not like this, but this is clearly what it says. There are many doctrines and truths that the Lord will withhold from the world because they are not ready to hear them. I don’t support plural marriage in our day today in the least bit. But I do support the Lord in whatever He will command no matter how unpopular it is.

Hi lax! Sorry! It got heated in there for a while and I was getting confused on what is what… it seemed like Muslim and LDS became interchangeable for a spell I ended up answering a Mohammad question and got rebutted.

I went back and read a few pages but it is difficult to figure out which questions did not get answered. Do you know of a specific one?

I think the LDS are back…

chris2009, don’t confuse tolerance with sanctification. God never sanctified polygamy. God hates polygamy! God tolerated polygamy in the OT because of the hardness of man’s heart, namely, Man didn’t accept the perfect will of God and chose to take risks in the permissive will of God. It was Jesus who taught us that. Take a look at 1 Timothy 3:2,12.

And I ask you: if polygamy is good and of God, why God didn’t create a dozen Eves for Adam, instead of a single helper?

Hello Christiano! I love that name - my favorite soccer player is Christiano Ronaldo. 🙂

There’s a difference between Islam and LDS faiths regarding polygamy. Islamic faith believes that polygamy is available to all worthy males.

LDS faith believes that God allows polygamy for certain specific people for certain specific purposes. So that, even during the time of Joseph Smith, polygamy is not available to every worthy LDS male, but to only specific ones.

Okay. I’m kind of new to the LDS faith, missionaries started teaching me in August 2009 and I was baptized on December 5th.
