Was reading the bible really banned at one point by the Church?

Luther’s Bible came out 1520. On his own authority, he removed 7 books from the Old Testament and “edited” parts of the new testament that didn’t suit his opinions.

Just to clarify: He didn’t “throw them out”, but translated them and put them together as a form of appendix and thought them good to read, but definitely not canon.

He removed them, by his own authority, from the Old Testament and put them in “a form of appendix” call “the apocrypha” (hidden or of questionable authority but still readable). Ripped from context and their proper place in Holy Scripture.

In addition his translation of several verses within in the Scriptures were based more on his own particular world view, rather than on what the texts actually said.
