Was Saint John Chrysostom anti-Semitic?

Does anyone have information about Saint John Chysostom’s homilies against the Judaizers? We have been discussing the accusations that he “hated” the Jews his homilies were the beginning of anti-Semitism that resulted in the holocaust. Does anyone here have any knowlrdge on this subject?

No “knowledge of the subject” is needed to defend the idea that St.JC could very well preach against Judaizers and not be anti-Semitic. St. Paul preached against them too. Was he anti-Semitic because of it? No. Plain and simple.

Anti-Semitism does not consist in never saying anything against the position held by any Jew, be they Judaizers or anyone else. Anti-Semitism is to preach hatred for Jews as a race of people, and I cannot believe that St.JC did that or intended that in his preaching against those Christianized Jews who wanted the Gentiles to adopt the ceremonial laws of the Jews.

A good example of real anti-semitism is Martin Luther. In his old age he raged against the Jewish race as a people, not just their beliefs.

Sadly, Adolph Hitler invoked Luther’s name to dupe protestants into standing behind Nazis.

Just one of the many reasons why protestantism is a grave offense against history and against the Church itself.

Why condemn all protestants/protestantism on the actions of one deluded old man, the ruthlessness of a sick tyrant or the fallible actions of a small fraction of German protestants?
Allow judgement to be visited only upon the sinners who committed the sin.
Your statement serves only to further divide Christians from one another. This is a good thing?

The topic of the thread is “revered religious figures who were anti-semitic and caused the holocaust.”

Wrong. Anti-semite is a person some Jews are against.
Therefore, you can’t argue, leave it to Jews. 😉

Seriously speaking, if we are accusing Saint Chrysostom today, Apostle Paul will be the next and Christ Himself then. Let’s not yield to such obvious provocation.

You can not take a person out of their time and view them in today’s society.

Yes some of what St John Chrysostom wrote could be viewed, today, as anti-semitic but that is wrong.

When reading ancient writings you must look at the time when they were written to understand things like this.
