I know this is a boring topic. I had a feud with my friend. My friend said Satan was the origin of Evil. However, I believed that the lack of good is the origin of evil. Please help us answer the question. Thank you very much.

Wisdom 1:13 because God did not make death,and he does not delight in the death of the living.14 For he created all things that they might exist,and the generative forces of the world are wholesome,and there is no destructive poison in them;and the dominion of Hades is not on earth.
15 For righteousness is immortal.Life as the Ungodly See It16 But ungodly men by their words and deeds summoned death;considering him a friend, they pined away,and they made a covenant with him,because they are fit to belong to his party.

Wisdom 2 :23 for God created man for incorruption,and made him in the image of his own eternity,
24 but through the devil’s envy death entered the world,and those who belong to his party experience it.

1 John 3:8 He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

Acts 13:10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?

Oh, so Satan was the origin of evil. Thank you very much.
Yes, it was Lucifer’s pride and self-regard that turned him from an angel of light into Satan, and condemned him to Hell along with one third of the heavenly host.

Every creation of God is good. Why can Lucifer become evil? I don’t understand 😦

It was the sin of pride and disobidence to God . Isaiah ch14 and Ezekiel ch 28 is about satan

Isaiah 14:12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star(satan), son of Dawn!How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!13 You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God I will set my throne on high;I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far north;14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit.

Ezekiel 28:1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:“Because your heart is proud, and you have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods, in the heart of the seas,’yet you are but a man, and no god, though you consider yourself as wise as a god—3 you are indeed wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you;4 by your wisdom and your understanding you have gotten wealth for yourself,and have gathered gold and silver into your treasuries;

Freedom! God granted all creatures with rational souls the freedom to choose Him or reject Him. Love is a conscious decision and must be made under conditions of freedom - especially in heaven. Evil is not a positive - it is a negative, a deficit - a lack of goodness. The devil had the freedom to reject God, and he did - an irrevocable, eternal choice.

So, we are well advised to choose wisely, but have the grace of the ability to repent of any rejection. Thus, the Sacrament of reconciliation - which the devil HATES and thus incites the faithful to avoid.

I think the real question is how did Lucifer go from being prideful, an unforgivable sin at the footsteps of God, but as bad and horrid as that was, to go from that, to complete and total evil, bent on the complete destruction of mankind, that is a long way.

So, how did Satan go from making one horrid sin, to complete evil? Was this an instant thing, or was it after the battle in Heaven and his ejection? How fast was the process to total evil? Same question for his followers.

There is probably no answer for this, and we don’t know enough about the nature of angels, but it is a question I have had for a while.

Evil is the result of a choice to sin. Satan had perfect grace, but chose eternal damnation instead. Adam and Eve had perfect grace, and chose death instead.

Both choices were unforced, and utterly irrational. They were given everything, and rejected it. Evil is a voluntary corruption of ones rational immortal soul.

I wonder if knew what was in store for him when he made that choice.

Evil I believe is the result intolerance and lack of empathy. Good I believe is tolerance and empathy. Its a dichotomy. Please help others and do good works. Satan has perfect grace, but was Granted eternal damnation by someone elses sin of pride. I believe they may have preached near universal salvation. Who wouldnt want to save everyone? People who were too proud? Purgatory still may not be fun though. A house divided against itself could not stand-the bible. Let he who has no sin(pride included) cast the first stone. The idol of the time split the house…While the pawns of the past may have changed hands, they could not deny the split house argument the idol of the time created. Its not a question of whether the devil can train angels, but whether the idol could if they were not too busy fighting the do gooders. I believe we are counting down to judgement day and the rebirth of the churches. I would say more but the mods may be upset with what I have already said.

I think Lucifer knew exactly what he was doing. For from time to time the sword of Righteousness has had to change hands to reflect the most Just. For justice is blind, and justice will come. Maybe the house should not have been split, but it was. For the Righteous shall live by faith. Halo’d are those that have seen the end from the beginning.

It might depend on what we mean by origin. Satan was the first being to rebel against God. Satan goes around trying to lure other people to make evil choices. People might say his choice was the origin of evil in that sense and that he’s often leading people into evil. That is a type of origin, but not the absolute origin. Evil doesn’t flow out of him as some type of creation. Evil is an absence of some good that should be there. Satsn is not to evil what God is to goodness.

I wonder if knew what was in store for him when he made that choice.
It has always been my understanding that Lucifer and the other rebel angels possessed perfect knowledge of the fate that awaited them should they disobey, and they decided to do it anyway. Much like us when we commit mortal sin: we do it with complete awareness that we are condemning ourselves to Hell, yet we go ahead and commit it. Such is the nature of evil.

God created everything, but as we should know, nothing evil should be found in God’s works. So even the act of God creating Satan was good. However, as you correctly mentioned, evil is indeed the privation of good. Free will in of itself is not the origin of evil as people said above, otherwise, God wouldn’t have given it to us. So evil is not a thing per se, otherwise it would have been created by God, but rather, the lack of good.
