I doubt in a contemporary context that any of the Popes from the 20th century would consider something like the American revolution to be justified today. If we were to start a war anytime there are unjust social or taxation conditions, then there would be a lot of wars going on.
Then again, the English crown itself was dissenting from its spiritual father in Rome. Rebels rebelling against rebels. Like father like son.
But it was over 200 years ago and its water under the bridge. What matters is what we do now.
