Was the expression "Take up your cross" in use before Jesus' death?

I always thought that the expression to “take up your cross” was a direct and specific reference to Jesus’ crucifixion. However, in the Gospels, Jesus is quoted as using that expression. Was the expression to “take up your cross” in use during Jesus’ time?
