Was the "Loaves and Fishes" just inspired sharing?

Hello All,
First time post. I am writing to a Deacon in my parish and I would like confirmation of my perspective. In his homily on Sunday at the 9AM Mass, he gave voice to a heresy as far as I was concerned. It was regarding the gospel story of Jesus feeding the multitudes.
He put forth this notion that the “Loaves and Fishes” miracles were situations where Jesus just inspired thousands of people to share the food that they brought with them. This idea has been around a while. I first heard it in a homily by the pastor of another church several years ago. I remember the pastor characterized it as a large “covered-dish” lunch.

To me this is the worst of skepticism. The “theologians” and thinkers who espouse these ideas seek to bring the Christ down to the level of man. Supposedly the goal is to make Him “accessible.” However, it puts forth the idea that the Christ is not 100% in control of the physical universe and that He can only operate with our help. This idea just doesn’t fit with Him raising Lazarus from the dead.

Can someone do a sanity check for me? I believe the power of the Christ is all of one piece. He either can manipulate matter and spirit at will or He can’t. He literally fed thousands of people with a few loaves and fish and the people attending the event had precisely nothing to do with it except to enjoy the bread and teaching. Of course, two millennia hence, we have this gospel story that further supports the idea that we are fed by Jesus’ Body and Blood.

I read so many articles and sources that put these various spins on Jesus and His gospels. This Deacon is in a position to teach but where is he getting his material. I looked around congregation and nobody else even thought about it I’m sure. The catechesis of the last 40 years has ensured that no one even thinks in these terms.

This man is a convert to Catholicism and is also running RCIA. He seems to be a very nice guy and not somebody out to “Protestantize” the Church any more than it already is. But what this says to me is that his only perspective is that of Vatican II and after. So this is what gets passed off as homiletics without any question from the pew. Am I nuts?

Would appreciate an answer before I submit my email…
Jesus’ Peace
