I suppose if I’m uncertain, I should confess it, but before I came back to the Church I went on a couple of dates with a man who was seperated and in the process of divorcing. He is not Catholic; he’s Jewish. Did I commit a mortal sin by going out with someone who was still legally married?

Dear friend,

Dating a married person is a mortal sin. However, for you it may not have been if you didn’t know is was wrong to do. Being legally divorced wouldn’t affect the morality here because the state does not have the power to dissolve what God has united. The Church sees divorced people as still married.
