Was this a sin of dishonesty/fraud?

Today, I went to pick up tickets to see the movie “Valkyrie” tonight. Myself and a friend (actually a local Priest) are going. When I purchased the tickets, I used my Student ID to get the discount for both tickets. My friend, a Priest, is obviously not a student. Also, I just graduated with my Bachelor’s degree, although I am still affiliated with the University (they have not asked me to surrender my ID or anything else and, if I so chose, I could register for more classes in the Spring I believe).

Did I commit a sin of dishonesty/fraud/theft by using my Student ID to purchase both tickets? If so, would it be mortal or venial?

Just place yourself before God and if you think that you need to explain anything, then you’ve sinned. As to its gravity, ask your priest friend.

:blessyou:

It was wrong but most likely a venial sin. The amount was miniscule. My guess is that you were thinking it was only a minor offense to begin with.

It’s best not to get into the habit of committing even venial sins. Sin is still wrong and it still offends God (and cheats your neighbor). It certainly does not make us better people. You have to put yourself in other peoples shoes, How would you like to be a business owner and have folks steal even small sums from you.

It’s not a big deal but if a whole lot of folks do that it could be really annoying. I used to own a small shop, and I knew there were a few shop lifters, and I even knew who a few of them were. I put up with them because they were still pretty good customers in the long run. Of course IF I thought they were stealing more than I was profiting, I would have banned them from the shop.

Think of it like sticking a pin in someones rear, once or twice may be an annoyance, but several times and they may want to knock your block off.
