Yesterday, on the kitchen counter, I saw a book called “Daddy’s Girl”. I read the back and it clearly indicated that it was about a young girl getting raped by her father. I looked through the book to see if it got really detailed and spoke about the acts because I was curious. If it did I would’ve slammed the book shut immediately, but it appears my scruples have gotten the best of me. It wasn’t out of lust, because as just stated, if I read anything inappropriate I would’ve slammed it shut and put it down, but I was simply curious. There was one point where it said something as I was picking random pages that I thought might’ve been so I read the whole sentence to see if it was. It wasn’t, but my scruples are driving me nuts. Should I confess this, or was this a simple case of curiosity?

I think you’re ok. I don’t think you were lusting or that lust played a factor in it. I mean, it was about a girl getting raped by her father. I don’t think you were lusting about that. If you were, you have more serious problems. It wasn’t something “sexy” that you opened.

I can’t really say I have the answer to that. I would not think that is a sin, but I’m no Priest. I would have been curious about the book as well, just to see how graphic it got. It’s amazing the kinds of horrible things people write about to sell a novel (unless it was based on a true story in which case I understand and would then feel horrible for the victim). But is it a sin? 🤷 I would guess no

If you are scrupulous, than, let the matter be. It was not a sin for you becayuse of your scrupulosity, obsessioihns, and compulsions.

I can’t see that this was a sin, you were not doing so out of lust. I imagine it must have been a true story, as I can’t imagine that a novel on that subject would be left lying about for family members to read. If it is a true story, why not say a prayer for the victim and her family?

Yeah, I asked my friend who is a modern theologian and he said it wasn’t a sin, however it was dangerous to check. He said to confess reading a book that could’ve led me to sin, if I simply want to put my scruples to rest, so I probably will.

And yes, this was based off a true story. It got a bunch of raves on the back cover from the L.A. Times and such, when really I don’t see it. I read about nine words throughout the entire book, but it didn’t really seem that interesting to me. It especially doesn’t deserve the raves if it gets detailed, either. You can tell your story but you don’t have to give us a step-by-step explanation of what happened.
