Was this a sin?

I am a new Catholic, Baptized Aug. 27. I will be Confirmed this Easter and will go to confession on Shrove Tuesday. Last Easter, before I knew it was wrong, I took Communion.
I guess my question is, was this a mortal or venial sin.

The key words in your question are “before I knew it was wrong.” While what you did was objectively wrong you would not be considered culpable due to not knowing it was wrong. To be culpable of a sin we must either know its wrong or its something that we should know is wrong. It does not appear either condition for culpability is present in your situation.

If there was any sin perhaps it was indifference but you’d have to search your conscience and perhaps briefly discuss it at your confession.
