Was this Baptism valid?

I was baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, but this was said immediately before my baptism and not during it. Does this matter? It’s probably worth noting that I was baptized by a protestant pastor.

In general, protestant baptisms are valid. if there is reason to doubt a specific baptism, a non-Catholic entering the Catholic Church would privately receive a conditional baptism of the formula, 'if you are not already baptized, I baptize you …". Conditional baptisms are only when there is serious doubt or inability to prove a baptism occurred.

If you begin the inquiry process, you would be considered a baptized non-Catholic. You should talk to your Catholic pastor about any doubts you may have regarding your baptism and he will guide you.

If you mean that the words were pronounced immediately before the pouring of water/immersion, then it was valid as long it was part of one continuous act (ex. the pastor did not stop and give a sermon between the pronouncement of the words and the use of water). Fr. Z answered a question about this on his site. I don’t have a link right now but a search on his site will turn it up.

I’ve just watched the video of my baptism again. The formula wasn’t said while I was being submerged. He said the formula first, and then he proceeded to submerge me. These were two distinct events. Any new comments? I know this thread is old, but I really want to know if I’ve really been baptized.

Hello,

Did he say “I baptize you…” and was it obvious that he was talking to you? If so, then it’s pretty clear that the words were united with the action.

How was this two distinct events? From what you describe, it was a singular action and perfectly fine.

What I meant was that he didn’t submerge me until after he had said the appropriate formula. I was wondering if it mattered, but it seems it doesn’t, judging from the comments. This gives me assurance. I had been worrying for a while.

Such is still considered one continuous action, so long as nothing else was done in between. What you describe is the typical manner in which Baptist denominations perform the sacrament, and the Catholic Church recognizes their baptisms as valid. If you’re concerned and considering becoming catholic, show the video to your priest and he will make the determination.

With the proper matter (water)?

If it happened as you said, you are validly baptized.
