Was this confession valid?

I went to confess what I thought was a mortal sin, but the confessor convinced me that it was venial and so it was forgiven as such. However, I later realized that there is no way that that sin could’ve been venial and so should I just consider it forgiven or should I try to re-confess it?

Maybe you didn’t explain it clearly enough? If he didn’t absolve you and you feel like it was a mortal sin then go back but to a different priest. This has happened to me before.

I think if you were that unsure as to whether it was a mortal sin or not, it most likely was not a mortal sin. You received absolution, so don’t dwell on it. You might ought to talk to your priest about scrupulosity, especially if this is a recurring worry for you.

Listen to the priest.

Scrupulosity needs firm guidance from your priest. Stop second guessing him.

Know in your heart that your sins are forgiven. Your problem is with scrupulosity. I would encourage you to pursue this with your confessor. Remember that the Lord is kind and merciful, and that your sins forgiven, never to be remembered again.

I mostly agree with everyone else but I don’t know why everyone is so quick to rule out that it wasn’t a mortal sin since they don’t know.

Because to be “mortal sin” these 3 things all need to be present-
-it must be GRAVE MATTER
-you MUST KNOW it is grave matter
-you must WILLINGLY do it anyway

If ALL 3 of these things are not present it is NOT mortal sin.

if was forgiven. period. that is all you need to know, your subjective opinion of its severity is not the point, your contrition, confession and absolution are the point. YOu ask questions everyday about the validity of your confessions, and this is doing you no spiritual benefit whatever. You must learn to trust your priest and bring concerns only to him. If he absolved you there is no need to discuss, to ask, to confess it again, to ask another priest, or to worry for one second. Christ loves you, that is why he welcomed you and forgave you.
