I apologize if this is not the correct forum for my question. At this morning’s Mass, a Deacon preached a sermon instructing us that St. John the Baptist was promoting collectivism and speaking against private property rights. He explained that all property beyond what is essential for survival rightly belongs to the poor. He cited several Catholic intellectuals as well as Pope Francis to support his views.
After Mass I approached this Deacon for clarification, and his answer made it clear to me that he believes a central governing body, preferably but not necessarily the Church, should control and distribute all wealth. This same Deacon will be giving a lecture in the parish hall to further explain the ‘Church’s’ social teachings.
I searched online for information about this Deacon and only found a few videos where he preaches the same message. He has no public bio or writings that I could find, and nothing in the parish bulletin or website explains his credentials.
Why was a Deacon allowed to give a sermon with such an inappropriate and political spin on this gospel? Is this a common practice now?
