Was this tubal ligation a sin?

Hi,

This is my first post and glad I joined this forum!

I have 2 children (both girls). My wife encountered very serious complications during birth on the first child. The doctors warned that she might not be so lucky on the next one. Well she also encountered very serious complications on the 2nd child and both almost died. This traumatized her greatly and somehow got the tubal during this. The doctors again expressed serious concern and were quite sure one or both would die the next time. This was 16 years ago.

This has bothered me for quite some time and my wife who is a good catholic doesn’t seem to think there is any wrong. I’m experiencing mixed feelings because I feel relieved that the danger is gone because of the tubal, but somehow feel that this is a sin. I wonder too if any sin was committed considering her traumatized state…?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi,

The Church considers such surgery to be objectively sinful. I cannot comment on your wife’s state of soul. She was under duress at the time. She can always confess it as God sees it if she wants to. But this is between her and God.
