Was Thomas Merton a crypto-Buddhist?

I have read Thomas Merton’s New Seeds of Contemplation and subscribe to a newsletters from his web site. At times I am deeply impressed with his writings (not that I understand them all) and yet I am skeptical because his web site seems to have a Buddhist leaning. What is the Church’s stance on Merton’s writings and was he drifting from the Catholic faith in the last years of his life?
