Not only in the the USA. The Catholic Church in England and Wales (perhaps among others?) likewise translates the Ascension, though I am not sure if it has done so only since 2006(?). As noted on that page, this practice was foreseen as early as 1969’s General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar #7.So, it is only in America then. I often wondered why my divine office have the option of Ascension being on Sunday. So very inconceivable in the rest of the world as Ascension would by necessity be on Thursday being 40 days after Easter.
