Washington Lieutenant Gov. Cyrus Habib is leaving his office and politics to become a Jesuit priest.

Habib, a Democrat, was presiding over the Washington State Senate a week ago, effortlessly running the upper chamber even though he is blind.

In an article for the Jesuit magazine America, Habib acknowledged some will be surprised he is giving up “a life of authority for one of obedience.”

He seems to support or have supported a lot of things that are contrary to the Catholic faith. A public disavowal of those things would be powerful. I read that he is blind and has survived cancer multiple times. Those things can contribute to a powerful witness as well.

It’ll be interesting to see how his vocation progresses–here’s praying that he receives proper formation and becomes a priest who builds up the body of Christ in the unity of faith. God knows we need priests like that.
