From Campus Reform:
Several students at George Mason University (GMU) signed a petition on Wednesday demanding lawmakers legalize “fourth trimester” abortions.

The petition, which was circulated on GMU’s flagship campus in Fairfax, VA., just outside Washington D.C., by Media Research Center reporter Dan Joseph said it was aimed at sending “a message to our lawmakers that women have the right to choose what to do with their bodies and babies” even “after their pregnancies.”

“If you don’t know what fourth trimester is, it’s after the baby is already born,” Joseph added in a video showing him collect the signatures.

This is reminiscent of MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry’s comments about when a baby is alive (video at link):

Noting the worldwide excitement surrounding Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry compared the hoopla surrounding the British royal birth to Texas abortion politics, and then offered her own definition of viability:

“When does life begin? I submit the answer depends an awful lot on the feeling of the parents. A powerful feeling – but not science,” Harris-Perry said on her show Sunday. “The problem is that many of our policymakers want to base sweeping laws on those feelings.”

What I am curious about is if these callous attitudes are consciously shaped by a cogent philosophy, like the one espoused by Australian ethicist Peter Sanger:

Even more radical, Singer suggests that since preference is influenced by self-awareness, babies should not be considered “persons” until they are one month old. Before that time, parents and their doctors should be free to kill a baby if, for instance, it has Down’s syndrome and the parents don’t wish to raise it.

*(NB: just because I say a philosophy is cogent, doesn’t mean I approve of it…)
*
Or if they have even thought through their positions on the matter and are just reacting instinctively based upon buzzwords that were programmed into their consciousnesses.

This seems to be a new and latest wave of abomination from Satan, the “right” to kill babies, just when I thought it was too evil to tolerate anyway.

I think it probably is based on Singer-type arguments. There is a lot of cognitive dissonance in holding the view that 2nd and 3rd-trimester abortions are permissible, but premature babies have a right to life. These students reject that contradiction.

But they’re so sold on “a woman’s right to choose” that they go on to speak the unspeakable. 😦

I think it’s a good thing. These whack jobs unknowingly do themselves more harm than good. People will soon realize that there is no difference between the 3rd and 4th trimesters-it’s is merely a matter of geography. Most people will find the idea of killing a baby outside of the womb abhorrent, and then hopefully will see the hypocrisy of their beliefs.

I hate to say it, but soon a person won’t be alive until they are 18… 😦

I took it to be a form of satire.

Anticipated reaction (from those that take it seriously) might be that people would raise objections and give their reasons why. Later the person (assuming the person is not against abortion) would be surprised when the same objections that he/she raised are applied to an unborn child.

Well what do you expect? You think Universities produce “thinking” people instead of just drones.

Sadly,I think this is the result of the mediocre education many students receive. No logic or critical thinking skills …just fluff, feel good pablum…😦

This is just a few dumb kids not thinking about what they are signing. No one could approve the killing of a newborn baby.

But how can we show our righteousness through our proclaimed disdain if it’s truly satire?

Some protests weaken a view when they seem to go overboard into the extreme unrealistic arguments. It’s not an effective means of evangelizing, in my opinion, and can be interpreted as fanatical, or worse. Those in an erroneous view might find justification when faced with an unrealistic opposing view. Then we should ask about complicity in helping others remain in err through an extreme, and unrealistic, protest.

This.

I think this kind of thing is good for the pro-life movement because it so blatently exposes the evils of abortion.

You don’t really think that do you?

If no one that thought that, we wouldn’t need a “Babies born alive law.” And yet we do.

If no one that thought that, there wouldn’t be people writing articles about “after birth abortions.” (Do a search, articles are out there.)

And if no one thought that, teens wouldn’t dump babies in dumpsters to hide the fact that they are having sex.

This doesn’t prove that they approve of doing so. Lots of people do things that they themselves believe are awful. 😦

There is no such thing as ‘after birth abortions,’ when one truly understands the definition of ‘abortion.’ If we can’t show an educated argument against abortions, it might be perceived as an argument based on emotions only.
