In light of the sexual misconduct allegations against various actors etc., how do you feel about watching movies and tv shows that have actors in them or have been produced etc. by people that have been accused of sexual misconduct?

With all of Hollywood’s nonsense, my sis and I have essentially boycotted movies across the board.

My TV shows are pretty much reruns of Star Trek, Dr. Who etc.

Blessings,
Stephie

To be fair one would had to work to ignore the sexual abuse problem in Hollywood long before the revelations of the past few months. Almost every child actor had claimed or suggested they were abused on their rise to stardom.

Now that names are named—it sin’t going to stop.

Every single show you have watched and every movie you have seen since they were invented has got people associated with it who committed bad sins in Hollywood. This has been going on literally since Hollywood was invented.
I’m not going to get all self-righteous about it just because names were named this year.

One can enjoy a movie, a painting, a record album, etc. without having to approve of or even know the life history of every musician, artist, engineer, gallery owner, producer, director, actor, financier, company executive, etc. who had a hand in creating it. If the movie, painting, record album etc. has as its subject matter sinful things, then that is more of a worry.

Don’t the overwhelming majority of movies have sinful things in? Could we watch hardly any movies anymore if we don’t watch movies that don’t have any sinful stuff in them?

You’re missing the point.

There was nothing sinful in some shows, like 7th Heaven and Cosby, yet both of the show’s patriarchs have been indicated in sexual abuse.

It’s not about the content of the shows, but about the directors, producers, and actors. No matter how squeaky clean the content the industry is rife with abuse.

Would you switch churches if your priest was “accused?” Convicted is an altogether different matter, but accused? Seems like we have a propensity to believe the court of public opinion on these matters.

Given the number of young people who were all abused and tried to talk about it for decades, given the fact that we know that exchanging “sexual favors” is the way the industry works anyone who has turned a blind eye to this is just ignoring what we’ve know for years. This is not the case, as with the church, where we have a number of abusers south of 1%. This is an industry that has been known to run on abusive and explotative sexual misconduct for decades. Just because we now have names dosn’t change anything, really.

The great composer Richard Wagner was an anti-semite. But that doesn’t keep people from enjoying his music. I think the same can be said of those accused or of sexual abuse. I completely understand folks not wanting to watch their movies (or listen to Wagner) but I don’t think one is obligated not to watch the movies (or listen to Wagner).

I don’t see how the actions of an actor, producer, etc. can’t help but affect your desire to consume their work. I don’t think I could put on a rerun of The Cosby Show and somehow forget the accusations against Bill Cosby. If there were a new movie coming out with Kevin Spacey I can’t imagine that I would have any desire to see it. It wouldn’t be a case of saying “I am going to boycott the actors,” but simply a lack of desire to watch their work. It would be very hard to get past the ick factor.

It is not sinful to watch a tv show/movie made by a sinful person. I am more concerned about subsidizing sinful content by paying for it. Christians should resist bad language/sinful content in entertainment. There used to be Catholic organizations like the Legion of Decency which successfully influenced the culture in a Christian direction.

George Takei of Star Trek fame has been accused of sexual misconduct.

Yeah…

Abuse is still rampant among the producers and actors of shows that would be totally within the “Legion of Decency” standards–like Cosby and 7th Heaven. There are a few clean shows here and there but in all reality Hollywood is devastatingly corrupt. No good can come of it.

I think we need to remember that as Catholics we are not to engage in rash judgment. I am not saying there are some out their against whom the allegations are true, but allegations are just a pointing of a finger. McCarthyism is not something our society ever learned from and we engage in this same mistake over and over. There was a new actress that “came out” again today, with the usual fanfare of “you go, girl,” just assuming the guilt of the person. Now we also have a few cases where there is physical evidence to back up the claims and even some who get caught by their own responses. But mostly, we have one person saying something about another. What we “believe” is irrelevant. Lack of evidence is lack of evidence.
