Watching show available in other country?

Hey, I don’t think my priest has time to answer this in confession but I was watching a tv show from another country on Dailymotion. I’m going to guess not legally. It’s not available to watch in its original form where I live, and if I were to buy the special edition Blu-ray videos (lol, they cost a lot of money) their region codes might not work or it would just be a bother to adjust. It’s an old obscure anime cartoon from the 80s, and I’m kind of bummed that it is not released uncut in America. All the same, I’ll stop doing it if it is a sin, but I’m not too sure in one sense because the company doesn’t seem to do much with the brand anymore except for special edition dvds every now and then. And that’s in Japan.

I’m sorry about this annoying ramble. But, if anyone has any good thoughts on this I would love to hear!

If you don’t own it, don’t watch it. If you can’t buy it, move on to another one of the zillions of forms of entertainment you can buy.

The fact that something is difficult to obtain, or that it’s foreign, or that it’s old, or even that it’s not available: these things in no way make it acceptable to take something that isn’t yours. Someone owns that content. If they don’t want anyone else to watch it, that’s their business not yours. They reserve that right as the rightful owner.

Let’s exercise a little common sense and a little detachment.

If there are any kind of software blocks in place, then it would be manifestly wrong to go around them.

If not, then I don’t know what would be wrong.

Come on, let’s not be neopuritans, IMNAAHO. These days, protected content is barricaded within hours. Unless you have reason to believe that Dailymotion is illegal, (and if it would be, someone would have stopped it long ago), then breathe and relax!

Take it up with your confessor if you are still bothered.

Maybe. There is some content which is out of copyright which may have blocks. It being out of copyright would mean there is no illegality at all in avoiding blocks.

As an easy example our local public library provides online photos. They claim a copyright on them. Some of them are so old they are most definitely out of copyright. As I understand it false copyright claims are themselves illegal. But the government doesn’t do anything to enforce that end of the law,

Exactly. It isn’t our job to enforce copyright law. It is the owners. And the way the law is now they have the state doing a lot of the work for them any way.
