Wow. Sometimes I really get thinking and today was a doozy. I was just not 5 minutes ago making coffee and getting ready for work when I all of a sudden thought of the fact that no living thing on this earth can survive without water. That’s not true of any other thing. Not every creature requires oxygen and not every creature requires nitrogen. There are bacteria that thrive without the presence of air. Fish in the sea do breath oxygen that comes from the water that surrounds them. There are also fish and invertebrates and bacteria etc, that do not utilize oxygen at all in the depths of the seas. We all need nourishment, but each creature has different requirements of nourishment. There may be other minor things that all creatures need, but the most basic, major thing we could never survive without is water. Every life form on this earth needs it and consists of it from the tiniest single cell to the largest whale, from the slimy algae to the largest tree, every living thing on earth needs water.

Now, there is another thing that every living thing needs in order to survive. A spirit. I understood that water and spirit were synonimous in Catholic theology, but I never grasped the depths of this. Ancient peoples were totally unaware of an algae cell or virus, yet water is necessary for their survival. Water is the common physical denomiator and spirit is the common spiritual denominator.

Basically, I’d like to start a discussion about this. We could quibble about other things being necessary - and rightly so. However I’d just like to discuss the importance/equality/synonimity of what water does here on earth and what the spirit does in the next life. And speculate on probably what both do (perhaps together like a catalyst) on the New Earth for us in eternity.

I admit that there have probably been discussions on this, perhaps even through history, but since this concept is rather new and hit me like a ton of bricks a few minutes ago, I’d like to start a discussion about it.

Any thoughts or ideas? Or am I just being goofy again!?! 😛

It’s fitting that water is the conduit through which the Holy Spirit acts. Water is the primordial element of life. Scientists searching for life in space look for signs of water. Earthly life springs from water.

A spring symbolizes new life. Water also symbolizes danger, chaos.

Baptism is a death/birth experience.
 
Agreed. I just get this very deep feeling that water is more important than any of us can imagine in the scheme of things. I can’t describe it, it’s so sublime. And also ethereal, because I can sense the utter magnitude of the concept, yet I can’t put it into words or grasp the entire meaning.

Kind of like when you have a particular word in mind, and it’s “on the tip of your tongue”, yet you can’t think of it at the moment.

That’s why I wanted to hear other’s thoughts on it. Perhaps in their posts it would express something either I can’t articulate or something that I haven’t thought of.

I know the feeling. When we think of matter as atoms and atoms as protons and nuetrons with space inbetween we end up thinking there is more space inbetween than material substance. For me it feels as if living matter is water. That as a corporeal being I am water and the space inbetween the atoms of the water I am is the spirit that makes the water that I am alive.

Anyway, you make a point I never thought about. And you may be onto something that is just too much for a human brain to handle. Life itself is sublime and we only know a fraction of what is involved. If God grants me the happy gift of seeing Him in Heaven, I can’t wait to learn all about it!

Wow. That was pretty awesome, although I have to admit I really don’t understand the “memory” aspect they were trying to explain.

Regardless, I think that water has a much deeper significance in our spiritual life than we can understand here on earth. I think once we see God face to face and understand things on a deeper level than we ever could on this plane of existence, it will all become crystal clear. As water… 😉
