I am considering buying “Way of a Pilgrim” + “The Pilgrim Continues His Way”.
Is this suitable for me, considering that I am relatively knew to Eastern Catholicism in theological ideas?
Spiritual Direction needed for this?
Aquinas and More Catholic store gave it 5 stars and their “Good Faith Guarantee” (aka 100% orthodox in teaching).
🙂
Thanks.

It’s not my favorite, but it is a classic. Go for it.

I personally recommend “The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology.”

Go for it.

I’ve read both. Apart from references to Orthodox saints (post 1054) and works such as the PHILOKALIA, there is little in the two works that is strictly non-Catholic.

I shouldn’t think you would need spiritual direction to read these books. IMNAAHO.

I think it’s an excellent choice. However, it bears reading and re-reading. Read it now, and then read it again in 6 months or a year or 2, as the Spirit moves you. No, I don’t think you need spiritual direction to read it. Just an open mind and an open heart–but that applies to most things, eh ;).

Many people, such as Phillip above, suggest “The Art Of Prayer”. Hmmm…Personally, I struggled with it and found it dry and difficult. But that’s just me 🤷. So, I put it down. Tried again a couple years later–same thing. Tried again a couple years after that–same thing. I gave it away. Oh well…Everyone’s different and gets different things (or not) from the same work.

God bless you on your journey!

In Christ,
Jeff

For me, that book is not a cover-to-cover read. I pick it up, read a short section, or a sub-section, and mull it over for a while.

As far as needing spiritual direction to read Pilgrim or any work, do you even have a spiritual director in your area? Do you have one who is EC?

If you have any concerns about reading this or that, cast those concerns away – or, if they persist, just read the Bible, which is what Pilgrim etc are attempting to reflect on.

I don’t have an eastern director (Big surprise, huh?:).

I have two near me…kind of both areas that aren’t the best of neighborhoods:(
It’s what’s inside that counts 👍👍!

Go to one, arrange to talk with the priest or deacon, take it from there. Trust in God to watch over your car :D!

Many blessings,
Jeff

I’m going to my nearest Ruthenian Church’s pre Pascha food sale March 30th!

If someone were asking about the Roman Catholic Church, you wouldn’t just recommend books or bake sales, right? You’d tell them that they need to experience the liturgy – in any neighborhood. 🙂

The Way of the Pilgrim is the best possible introduction to the Jesus Prayer and its spirituality. It mentions St Paissy Velichkovsky who translated the Philokalia, also St Innocent of Irkutsk (a Ukrainian Orthodox saint and Siberian missionary), and also mentions how the Orthodox St Photios prayed the Prayer incessantly.

The sections on how to make a good Confession should be mandatory for all Christians, in my view. The more you read of it, the more you will want to pray the Prayer.

It looks like I’m going to have to read the Way of a Pilgrim again some time. Sadly I’ve misplaced my copy. My wife and I thought we’d lent it to a friend, but she claims she returned it to us. 🤷 Well, hopefully someone is getting some good use out of it.
