My Church is doing alot of “firsts” this year. One of them is the Way of the Cross or Stations of the Cross. I just came back from it and wanted to share my experience. It was very powerful. I went with my mother who grew up a RC she said that it was very similar to when she was young. Each station included the explanation, meditation and prayer. And in a true Lutheran style a Hymn. My mom did not remember hymns being sung when she was a kid. There were 8 stations instead of the traditional 14, it omitted any that were not specifically found in Scripture. I hope they do it again next year, if not I will be finding one somewhere.

The 8 stations were as follows:
  1. Jesus is condemned to death
  2. Jesus takes up the cross
  3. The cross is laid on Simon of Cyrene
  4. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
  5. Jesus is stripped of His garments
  6. Jesus is nailed to the cross
  7. Jesus dies on the cross
  8. Jesus is laid in the tomb.
The ones omitted(not specifc to Scripture)
3. Jesus falls the first time
4. Jesus meets His Mother
6.Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
7.Jesus falls the second time
9.Jesus falls the third time
13.Jesus’ body is removed from the cross (Deposition or Lamentation)

Excellent!

The Anglican Church down the street from me has a Stations of the Cross with 9 Stations. I’ve an Orthodox Stations of the Cross booklet with 12 Stations as well.

Ultimately, the Stations of the Cross unite us intimately with our Lord’s Passion at Jerusalem. They are for all Christians!

Happy Easter.

For the CC, there is usually a hymn that is sung…it is titled…“Were You There”…

That was one of the Hymns we sang, it is one of my favorites!
I read that it originated in the 19th century as an African American Spiritual song. I guess both of our Churches adopted it. It is a simple but very powerful hymn, IMO.

Number thirteen is mentioned in scripture. So is it more that the event isn’t described in detail is because it’s omitted?

That is a good point. I do not really know why it was omitted. It could have something to do with that once Jesus gives up His Spirit then His suffering is over.
Also I read in a few places, correct me if I am wrong. When RC does the 13th do they place Jesus into the arms of the Blessed Mother?
I beleive that is why it was omitted from the version we did. Because in Scripture it says Joseph of Arimathea places His body in the tomb?
But to be honest I do not really know why it was omitted, I would have to ask.
