Thinking of ways in which the Novus Ordo(NO)/Ordinary Form(OF)/Pauline Mass is closer to the Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy than the Vetus Ordo/Extraordinary Form(EF)/Tridentine Latin Mass(TLM) in many ways, and I’m looking for (name removed by moderator)ut to see if I’m missing anything.

The list I’ve got currently:

More standing and less kneeling

Use of the vernacular tongue

Procession of the Gospel Book

Use of the Ektania (Litany) of the People / prayers of intercession

Use of Eastern style Anaphoras which contain an explicit Epiklesis

Standing to receive Communion

Reception of the Blood as well as the Body at Communion

What am I missing?

The standing bit is a red herring.

Standing has always been the position of respect in the East, and kneeling the position of penitence.

Kneeling on Sunday was in fact banned at the Nicean council.

This was the same in the West until the middle ages, when people started kneeling to earthen kings, and accordingly gave the same respect to the King of Kings.

So in the west, there are two reasons for kneeling. (hmm, something in me wants to call them “real kneeling” and “fake standing” but . . . 🤣)

So most of the parts where RC, old or new, kneel are translated to stand in the east.

Separately, both the OF offertory and the Eastern Great Entrance descend from the early church presentation of the bread and wine brought by the congregation for use at the liturgy (or is there an EF parallel?).

Byzantine practice does not have a Communion service on Good Friday, even though there are two major services (12 Gospel at noon, and burial vespers in the evening).

(After the burial service, Father commented that it seemed shorter than he recalled. I pointed out that after the last three days [Wed is long due to sacramental anointing for everyone afterwards], it was short by comparison, and he laughed).
