I am wondering if anyone has methods that have worked for them in actively trying to develop the virtue of Temperance.

I am looking for ways to strengthen overall self-control and form a more disciplined will to help avoid sins of excess, overindulgence, etc.

Are there specific prayers or devotions to certain saints? Anything I can implement into daily life?

Thank you!!!

St Margaret of Cortona is often invoked as a patron saint for dieting and weight loss, as well as temperance in general. I’m rather fond of her and have asked her intercession through novenas.

Additionally, just practice, practice, practice. Give up small indulgences to start. Go meatless an extra day per week. Give up a favorite food on weekdays. Take showers at a not optimal temperature. Sit in a less comfortable chair.

It feels good to learn that we can, in fact, endure these small things and not be enslaved to our bodies. But it takes time. If you use overindulgence as a crutch for coping with big problems, I’d recommend learning other coping techniques as well (self-help books, therapy, etc could help you figure those out.)
