We are Like God's Pawns in a Chess Game

I was thinking, and I realized our faith journey is similar to that of a pawn on a chess board. The pawn starts in the front, with the stronger pieces (holy people and saints) behind them. If the pawn reaches the other side (living a holy life and dying in a state of grace) then they too can become a saint. Satan’s army (the other team) tries to temp the pawns and “capture” them.

This is probably a really inaccurate and stupid analogy I made up. What do you guys think?
 
I have never learned how to play chess. Maybe that is why I am so bad at life! :eek:
 
When I saw the title, I thought you were going to say that we were insignificant, but it’s a neat analogy the way you put it. Yes, it’s very hard for a pawn to make it to the other side of the board (or to become a saint).
 
Well, as for “God’s pawns,” we must remember free will and add that into the equation or we might seem like Calvinists. That’s important, though the analogy is decent.

No, really? Same here! I always feel like a dummy because I understand what it is, but not… the actual gameplay. 🤷

I don’t wish to speak for you, but I don’t have the patience for chess, and I suspect that is a big part of why I am bad at it. 😊 My husband is an excellent chess player. When we first met, I may have lost to him in an embarrassingly short number of turns and completely blown my cover about being interested in chess club, when really I was more interested in the president of the chess club…:whistle:

Nope! No one ever taught me and I really had no interest to learn!
 
To further the analogy, playing chess passively and waiting for your opponent to set up attacks against you is a sure way to lose. It’s similarly hopeless if you go on the attack hastily or without support from other pieces.

I guess the main problem with it is in chess turning a pawn into a queen is just a means to achieve the only goal that really matters–cornering the opponent’s king. In the spiritual battle with Satan of course it’s the other way around!

Well, I learned how to play chess when I was very young but I was never any good at it. All my childhood friends wanted to play chess with me because they could all beat me. So I guess I’m not so good in the game of life either. But, as my father used to say, it all evens out in the wash.

I like it as long as the assumption isn’t that the chess game is God v. the devil. The pawns would have to autonomously be choosing their own path, whereas in a typical game of chess they are simply being manipulated 🙂
 
I thought that in chess each piece was only able to move in certain directions whereas we…
 
IMHO we are NOT pawns of the Game of Life, we are
FELLOW soldiers of the Kingdom of God, we
to Cooperate w/ God IF WE ARE WILLING, this can
be achieved thru much prayer so that we can WIN
the crown of Life which the Lord will give to those who
love Him and His Kingdom.

I was not one for the game of Chess. I learned to play when I was younger, too.

I see this similar to you, but I’m playing the white pieces and the Devil this playing the black pieces.
