some Protestants use matthew 6:7 to justify their position that catholics are pagan since when catholics pray the rosary its some kind of a repititive. what’s the catholic response for this??

Just ignore that website. The probably ignorant bigots behind that site don’t know what they are talking about. They are blatantly anti-Catholic and anyone who has a brain should stay away from that evil site.

Hello.I have many Protestant friends(The area I live in is about 98%Protestant)Most don’t know that the Rosary is meditation on the Gospell,(The Joyful,Sarrowful etc.Mysteries)The life of Jesus Christ. The verse they use in your post is about pagans, who called every gods name when they prayed hoping one of them would hear.Read Ps.136.This prayer was read in Jewish temple and is repetitive. The book The Essential Catholic Survival Guide by Catholic Answers staff is a good book to have .Peace:)

The Rosary is a prayer of contemplation on the mysteries of Christ. I don’t see how that’s pagan or repetitive.

To borrow from father Corapi, Jesus is at the very center of the Rosary. Praying the Rosary IS praying the Gospel. The Rosary has a body and a soul. The body is the Our Father’s, Hail Mary’s, and Glory Be’s. They center your mind to meditate on the soul of the Rosary… the life of Jesus. His birth, Passion, and Resurrection. This is an extraordinarially powerfull prayer that will lead you on the shortest, straightest path to Heaven, and has incredible value when prayed for others.

There are repetitive prayers in the Bible itself, for example Daniels chapter 3 or Psalm 150. But I think it is pretty pointless to argue about that - you are not going to convince them. As for me, all I know is that Rosary works! I have experienced it myself a few times 😃

Matthew 6:7-8: Vain Repetition

Many non-Catholics believe that praying the rosary violates Jesus’ teaching about “vain repetition” found in His Sermon on the Mount:

“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:7-8)

Immediately after saying this, He went on to teach the crowd the following prayer:

"This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” (Matthew 6:9-13)

Jesus didn’t say, “You might want to say something like the following”…he said, “When you pray, say” and He gave us precise words that we should pray daily for our daily bread, and these words have been repeated for 2,000 years. Is this “vain repetition”? Hardly.

Matthew 26:43-44
43When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

Jesus prayed a third time saying the same things he had said previously. Is this “vain repetition”? Hardly.

Revelation 4:8
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings.Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

The creatures keep saying the same thing over and over and over again - day and night. Is this “vain repetition”? Hardly.

Here are two good articles on the Rosary that answer objections to it:

I waded through what passes as information and knowledge on this web site, I would advise wearing rubber waders.🙂

Typical group that uses one verse theology to get just about everything WRONG! Many untruth, ok lies, about Roman Catholics and others who are not of their “Christian Assembly”.
I would just avoid such sites if they offend you.

One quick point that put them outside Christianity:

#13 Original Sin is a false doctrine. That splat sound is God hitting His forehead in a Homer Simpson moment of “Why did not I think of that!?”

Another point to “they don’t have a clue”:
#15 Catholics are unwilling to defend their faith! yeah right…

As to Matthew 6:7 and praying the rosary, what is empty about it? When I or my family pray the rosary it is not empty words. I have sat in many a Baptist service growing up. I heard many long winded sermon prayers full of empty phrases and the same ones over and over and over. We, the youth, had a betting pool…Baptist bet just like we/they drink…on who would get called upon. My friend Larry had a knack for knowing just what would be prayed and said before the person said it.

Jamil, read all of the passage that the one verse comes from. You will find out that Jesus did not say what this one group assumes He said or meant.

Blessings.

The key here is “fruitless” repetition. The repeated Hail Mary’s and Our Fathers are not fruitless but very effective prayers; many of the words being stright from scripture.🙂

Like most everything…, they misinterpret this as well. It was meant as vain repetitions will not be heard… It means that pagans repeating prayer, no matter how many times, won’t be heard. It doesn’t mean that one is pagan because they pray often or repetitively. Likewise, it doesn’t mean that Christian repetitive prayer is the same as a pagan praying. Their falsehoods and attacks are really about authority, and their desire to have their own, instead of what God set up for His Church.

I guess then, they should only say the Our Father once in their lifetime?

Jesus is referring to pagans who are reciting a long list of divine names. Jesus Himself recites the same prayer three times at Gethsemane in Matthew 26.

We don’t need the rosary, it is true. In the same way, you can make a cross-country trip to a destination you’ve never been to before and you don’t need to take any maps with you. You don’t need to sit down to dinner Thursday and have turkey and all the fixin’s–you could just have water and nutraloaf–it has everything you need to keep body and soul together. (Don’t know what nutraloaf is? It’s a mixture of cubed whole wheat bread, nondairy cheese, raw carrots, spinach, seedless raisins, beans, vegetable oil, tomato paste, powdered milk and dehydrated potato flakes–served to obnoxious prisoners in some locations).

Can you benefit from praying the rosary? Of course! In the same way that the cross-country traveler can benefit from having maps on hand. And let’s face it–if you’re going to feast, you want something that appeals to the eye and the nose, that tastes good not just the bare minimum “meets the requirements to qualify as food for the day”. So if we take maps with us on cross-country journeys and worry about making attractive meals for festive occasions, why should we look at our spiritual life and cut it as bare as we can? Why should we not surround ourselves with the richness that can be found in the properly prayed rosary (properly prayed meaning to truly meditate on the mystery of the decade being said, to take the time to enunciate the words rather than running them together)?

So, in the strictest sense, it is true that we don’t need the rosary. But the record is clear–more have benefited from including the rosary in their lives than have benefited from excluding the rosary. Challenge the detractors–pray the rosary once a day for 30 days. Just try it (get a hold of St. Louis de Montfort’s book on the rosary and have a card with the long form method to hand out with a rosary) … Fair warning … one might not make 30 days before he finds himself inexorably drawn to the Catholic Church (it took 17 days for me, but that’s because I’m stubborn).

They have misconstrued the meaning of this passage of Scripture. If you spend any time reading the Old Testament at all, you will see that Judaism is replete with repetitive traditions, prayers, and rituals. Protestants themselves repeat the Our Father (Lord’s Prayer) regularly. Many use a set blessing that they always say before meals, etc. as well. And what about that prayer I was taught as a child? "Now I lay me down to sleep… " Even Protestants begin teaching their children to pray with simple repetitive prayers. This passage was to caution people that using more words with little meaning and/or devoid of intent is not going to improve your chances of being heard by God, nor will it justify a lifestyle not in compliance with His commandments.

The Rosary is ultimately a meditation on the mysteries of Christ’s life, death, and ressurection. The prayers are simple and repetitive to facilitate that meditation. Not only that, but the Our Father and the Hail Mary are scriptural. The Our Father was given us by Jesus Himself. The Hail Mary combines the salutation of Gabriel at the Annunciation and Elizabeth’s declaration when she was filled with the Holy Spirit at the sound of Mary’s voice. A petition for her intercession is added to close. The Gloria Patri (Glory Be) is also used in a number of the more traditional Protestant churches, as is the Apostle’s Creed.

Aside from all this, the Rosary itself is considered by the Church to be a private devotion, not something that is required of all Catholics. Of course, a number of popes have highly recommended it to the faithful, but never in a fashion that could be considered binding.
