Taking off of my other thread about the apparent injustices involved in not being able to get a dog…

Driving home today, I sent up a prayer to St. Francis, just letting him know how much we wanted a dog to love. I just let it pour from my heart. He must have been listening.

We met with an adoption specialist and tonight Elmo is home with us. He is 11 months old and a poodle-who knows what mix. He is happy and well behaved, but a little on the skinny side. Some time with this family should clear that right up though. 😃

I don’t know how to get picures on here, or else I would get one up for you all to see. We already love him. Everything about him is so perfect for our family.

:extrahappy:  ❤️

ELMO!!! What a splendid name! I am so pleased for you - and what a lucky pup Elmo is! :hug3:

**YAY! :extrahappy:How wonderful for all of you, and especially your new best friend! **

Thank you all! Our first 24 hours has been great! We are working on potty training and crate training, which is not going as bad as it could be I suppose. He takes to his crate well at bedtime, but potty training…

I think after he gets used to his new situation he will learn better. I hope. He is a really, really good boy. I think that whoever had him before treated him very much as a house dog and socialized him very well.

We are all very happy. My oldest was awake and dressed at the crack of dawn so he could take Elmo for a walk. At least he is eager to help out… hopefully that lasts! 😃

**How’s Elmo doing? 🙂
**
Aw, thanks for asking. He had a check up yesteday at the vet and is healthy, if a bit underweight.

He is very happy here and we are all getting on just fine. He is such a joy to have in the house. He loves to play and chase a ball, much to the delight of my kids and husband. And he is also my baby. He will always come curl up on the couch and use me as his personal chair. I love it!

The only down right now… we have to wait until the 24th until we can bathe him because he was recently neutered. He’s starting to smell a little doggy.

**Wipe him down with some “sensitive skin” baby wipes or you can buy ones especially made for pets. It’ll get you through to the bath:) Oh, and get between the toes…some dogs (mine included:p) can get really stinky feet

I want a dog, too!!!

But just don’t know if it would be fair to let the dog home alone for most of the day while my wife and I are at work.

Does anyone let their dog stay home alone?

By the way, what do dog owners do during vacations?

(I want a doberman, my wife wants a labradoodle)

We get one of the neighboring teen agers to come in to feed, water and walk them twice a day - also pick up mail and flyers. We currently have a deal with one who desperately wanted piano lessons but couldn’t afford them. My wife swaps lessons for dog care.

I know that many working people/couples/families have dogs but personally I don’t think that’s fair. Dogs are VERY social creatures and need lots of attention, not just food and water. I guess that’s why the “doggy daycare” business is growing so rapidly:shrug:

As for your choices of breeds, why? Have you researched them thoroughly or is more of an aesthetic appeal? My hubby and I have a Bouvier that we got because my hubby just HAD to have one. We completely regret it. Bouviers have very specific temperments/needs that we just can’t completely meet. So it is really not fair to Bear but we make the best of it. Any future 4 legged additions to our family will be much more thought out:o

I have been looking into Dobermans. I have read they have a bad rap. I personally want a good dog to bark at intruders, who will also be a good running companion with me. I am not into the cropped ears thing.

My wife wants a labradoodle because they look so darn cute and the expensive ones are non-allergenic, don’t shed, etc.

We have pretty much decided not to get a dog until we can afford to let my wife quit.

I just got an 8 week old pure-bred Bassett Hound about two weeks ago! Her name is Lady, and she is a great dog so far. Speaking of St. Francis, I saw a St. Francis medal to put on a dogcaller that has their name on the back. I’m thinking of getting it.

Happy belated Birthday, Semper Fidelis!

Ooh-Rah!!!

Best thing to do would be to contact your local doberman breeder’s association and rescue society. They can point you in the direction of a good breeder or a rescue dobey that would fit your home/lifestyle. The last thing you want to do is support “backyard breeders” or puppy mills:(

Is non-shedding, non-allergenic an important feature to her or would it just be a nice bonus?

Dh and I both work full time, but we waited until we had in-home child care before getting a dog. My husband’s aunt watches the kids at our house now and she was agreeable to us getting a dog as well.

Personally, I don’t like to leave dogs home alone for more than a few hours at a time. When we do leave though, Elmo gets crated. Maybe that will change when he is better potty trained, but I’m not sure since we have 2 cats also.

As for vacations, usually our vacations are all places dogs could go to, so Elmo will always go with us. In the event that he can’t go, he will stay with my MIL, or she will come stay with him.
