Ordinarily, all the readings and prayers are the same, however there are some occasions on which the propers for the vigil vary from those of the actual feast day.

If you attend Mass on Saturday morning you will hear a different set of readings than the vigil Mass because they are different liturgical days. It is true that the vigil Mass readings can vary, Christmas eve differs from Christmas day for example (the readings on Christmas day also vary from Mass to Mass.)

The way it was explained to me is that the liturgical Sunday starts Saturday evening and runs all day Sunday. I asked because occasionally we attend a 5:00 or 5:15 PM Mass on Sunday.

We have to be careful when using the term Vigil. There are only 6 true Vigil Masses during the liturgical year with the Easter Vigil being the ‘mother of all vigils’ so to speak. These Vigils have totally different readings from the Feast Day itself. The Saturday evening Masses are not vigils but rather ‘anticipated’ Sunday Masses.

The 6 Vigils are:

Vigil of Christmas
Easter Vigil
Vigil of Pentecost
Vigil of Saint John the Baptist
Vigil of the Assumption
Vigil of Saints Peter & Paul

There is no “greeting of neighbors” during the Mass. After the Sign of the Cross and the greeting by the priest, there is no “say howdy”. That’s not what the Mass is for. Have social time before or (preferably) after Mass. Not during Mass. The priest is not respecting the liturgy.

Actually I’m not sure that’s the worst of it there, as I’m not 100% sure that priest says the eucharistic prayers word for word. In fact seeing the state my parish is in makes me feel like this: :bighanky:

Trouble is I kind of feel like I should support the parish I live in, since after all it’s their job to save all the souls in that area, mine included. But how, if I dread going in there? I almost feel like going in there with a notepad and missal and writing down what goes on for future use, but then that seems a bit disrespectful since it is still the Holy Mass, after all. And my nature is to be extremely blunt and possibly a bit sarcastic, and that won’t get me anywhere if I attempt to just talk to the pastor afterwards. Yes, there’s a good church I know about but it seems like no one should have to drive miles for a proper liturgy when they’re a few blocks from the church.
