If you attend Mass on Saturday morning you will hear a different set of readings than the vigil Mass because they are different liturgical days. It is true that the vigil Mass readings can vary, Christmas eve differs from Christmas day for example (the readings on Christmas day also vary from Mass to Mass.)Ordinarily, all the readings and prayers are the same, however there are some occasions on which the propers for the vigil vary from those of the actual feast day.
The way it was explained to me is that the liturgical Sunday starts Saturday evening and runs all day Sunday. I asked because occasionally we attend a 5:00 or 5:15 PM Mass on Sunday.
