Hi everyone,
I just need to talk to someone besides my family who just breaks down crying when I even mention it. The night before last our one eyed Chihuahua had a stroke and last night had to be put down . he was the sweetest dog and we have had him since I was 14 (I am now 26) and I just am so torn up. I just can’t imagine never seeing him again and seeing his little happy face when I walk through the door. He was an old guy but just a few days ago he was springing around wanting to play and be picked up and then just suddenly he is gone. The only thing I can think is I hope to see him in heaven one day. I know what the church says about animals but I just …idk I have to think I’ll see him again one day or I just lose it more than I already am. St Francis of Assisi pray for me and my family.

I’m so sorry!

What a sweet little dog!

Here is pic of him from last week his name was Nelson.
What a handsome guy! I know you miss him already. We’ve been there in the last year with our Chihuahua (Jeremiah) and our older cat, (Patience). They now reside under the watchful eye of a statue of St. Francis and the wolf in our yard with solar lights shining on their graves.

It’s hard…I know. It pushed my buttons to research and create the following paper.
Material soul.
Taken from Catholic Answers (Catholic.com)
All living creatures – angels, humans, animals, plants – have souls. However, there are two kinds of souls: spiritual and material. Angels and humans have spiritual souls. Animals and plants have material souls. Something that is spirit is not subject to the decay of change. Thus, angels do not die and human souls survive the separation of body and soul at death. Material things however are subject to change, thus they are subject to decay and death. As animals and plants have material souls, at death their souls cease to exist.
Whether God will choose to re-create animal and plant souls at the end of time when the material universe is transformed (cf. CCC 1060) is something we do not yet know. However, the Church does not teach that animal and plant souls are “disposable” in the sense that they are of little consequence and can be wasted if humans wish to do so. Animals and plants do not have inherent rights, but humans, because they are appointed by God to be just stewards of nature, have a responsibility to be kind to animals and prudent in using the world’s natural resources. See the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

The seventh commandment enjoins respect for the integrity of creation. Animals, like plants and inanimate beings, are by nature destined for the common good of past, present, and future humanity. Use of the mineral, vegetable, and animal resources of the universe cannot be divorced from respect for moral imperatives. Man’s dominion over inanimate and other living beings granted by the Creator is not absolute; it is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation (CCC 2415
).

What Spirits Are and What They Aren’t by Frank Sheed

My own Scriptural considerations:
  1. Code:
Ecclesiastes 3:21 Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down to the earth?
  2. John 11: 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
  3. Code:
Luke 20:38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to him.
  4. 2nd Peter 3:13 But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
  5. Code:
    Revelation 21: 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband;
3 and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them;

4 he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away."

5 And he who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Since we do not know for sure the end of the souls of animals (#1 above) and we know that Christ stated that he is “the resurrection and the life” (#2 above) and since Our Lord stated that all live to God, (#3 above), then we see twice in the New Testament where Christ promises a new Heaven and earth (#s 4 & 5 above) it seems logical that we may comfort ourselves in our loss of our beloved pet friends with a hope that we will see them again since animals cannot sin it seems more likely that God might resurrect them because of the blessing they have been to us in their lives.

Keep in mind that this is not a teaching of the Catholic Church, or anyone else, but nothing more than my own pious theory.

I’m so sorry that you’ve lost little Nelson. The death of a pet leaves a hole in your heart, that’s for sure. x

I am so, so sorry. I’ve had to do that too, and it is truly heartbreaking. :console:
Until we get to Heaven we won’t know what it’s really like, but I hope
the following poem will help you as you grieve. ( I changed a few words…).

** Do dogs go to Heaven?

My little Nelson passed away, no more to breathe a sound.
I held him for the last time, then entombed him in the ground.
Day and night I wept so much, in tears I thought I’d drown.
I searched my soul for comfort, but no peace therein was found.

In great despair, I hit my knees and then began to pray.
“Dear God, will I ever see, my dog again someday?”
I raised my eyes and saw an angel standing near a gate.
I sensed an inner peace I’d never felt before that day.

The angel smiled and said to me, "Oh you of little faith!
God sees every bird that falls; He knows your Nelson’s fate.
I have met your little dog, I saw him pass my way.
Your precious dog is still alive; he just walked through this gate.

Heaven is much lovelier than you can comprehend.
No pain or grief, no tears or fears, and life will have no end.
God gave to man His only Son, to cover all his sins.
So why would God withhold from you, your pure and loving friend?”

The angel took me by the hand and said, “Now come with me.
A small glimpse of Heaven I’ll give to you, so that you can see.”
Through the gate and o’er a Rainbow Bridge we did proceed.
Through green valleys filled with flowers, rolling hills and trees.

“Wow, so this is Heaven!” The place was filled with joy !
I saw my Nelson playing there, with dogs and cats and toys.
He also had some doggie treats, and food that he enjoyed.
He’d made a lot of new friends there, including girls and boys.

Then I saw a small child come near, and hug my little dog.
She said to him, “I love you so,” and kissed him on the face.
The angel said, "This child just crossed the Rainbow Bridge today.
Now she needs a little friend, to love and help her play.

God’s love for her would be enough, in that make no mistake.
But in His love, He knew full well, the child would want a mate.
This is why God called your dog unto this splendid place.
God’s entrusted her with him, ‘til you** pass through the gate."

I pleaded, “May I hug them both?” The angel answered, “No,
you’d violate a sacred site, and now it’s time to go.”
He led me back across the Bridge and through the gate to home.
He left me there with new-found hope and peace within my soul.

If someone ever asks what happens to a dog that dies,
Just give a gentle smile of joy and look them in the eye.
Take their hand and comfort them and tell them not to cry.
For dogs don’t die, they simply cross a bridge to paradise.

losing a pet is very painful. it is a great loss. Nelson looks like he was a great companion and friend. I pray you will be thankful Nelson was part of your life and that God will help heal your grief.

Awww…what a sweatheart he was!

I’m so sorry for your loss.:console:

May God give your heart the peace that passes all understanding as you grieve.

I personally believe animals will be in heaven, because I know I, too, am looking forward to seeing my animals again. Heaven would be incomplete without them.

What has helped me greatly when I lose an animal is to get another right away, one which really needs a home. One can’t replace an animal of course, but I have found it helpful. Sometimes, I have even gotten an animal that reminds me in some way of the animal I just lost.

Praying.

What a sweet little dog. I will pray for you. I’m very sorry for your loss.

I’m so sorry; I know how very difficult that is. Please allow yourself to grieve your beautiful friend, and remember to thank God for the blessing he was to you and your family!

I wouldn’t rule out seeing him again one day. Take care hon :gopray:

Thank you for sharing your grief with us so that we can pray for you. The loss of a pet can leave quite a hole in our hearts…I know from experience.

God is so good to us that he gives us the companionship of animals. They are such wonderful examples to us of what unconditional love looks like.

May God give you peace.

That’s so beautiful. I, too, hope that I’ll be able to meet my lost pets after death. 🙂

I am so sorry to hear that. We had to put our dog down a year or so ago also and I am still not really over it. All the best wishes to you.

I am so sorry to hear this. I remember going through the same thing when my pet parrot died- I had her for six years, and she literally followed me around like a puppy. What comforted me is knowing she was out of her misery (she suffered from egg binding for two whole days but hid it very well.) Your sweet little friend is in the hands of God now.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your little guy looks so sweet!
Our pets are so dear to us, I really think we will see them again in heaven.
I also think that pets are one of God’s special treats for us while we are here on earth, a little taste of the joy that we will experience in heaven.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. Dogs are such great companions so I know it’s a big difference in your life.

I’m so sorry for your loss! 😦 :console:

We have 2 that are getting advanced in years. We might have to be going this route alO in the next couple years. It’s heartbreaking to think of. They really become one of the family. 😦
